Children will spawn with no name, passions and do nothing of value to the colony
So, before Biotech kids would receive a name upon birth and have certain passions and traits inherited from its father/mother/random.

Right now, since i don't own that DLC, babies spawn as "Child" + the family name, and are completely blank slates, no passions, no traits... nada. Even if their parents were handy workers, or complete lunatics, kids will not inherit those traits. I'd be nice to ease the restrictions artificially imposed since 1.4 and at least allow non-owners of the DLC to play by the old system.

This way, anyone could feed kids rations (same as feeding patients) and ever since they leave their beds at around age 7, they could do menial work like crafting, sow seeds or use BB guns to "hunt", and wear regular clothes. Being constrained and forced to heat the whole colony to 21 Celsius just because kids cannot wear clothes and have to go naked til 13 feels very poor for a colony manager

that sucks just uninstall mods or suming

Which one? xddd, RJW is working as intended, hard-coding from vanilla is the problem. 1.3 worked as a charm and had a 40-50 pawn multigenerational thriving colony; now its impossible to do such thing

If you don't own the DLC and children are spawning, it's up to the mod makers who made whichever mods you're using for children to fix it.

Not very helpful. Again, these arbitrary restrictions (feeding, clothing, traits and learning) weren't hard coded into the game; they are now, those restrictive mechanics are included into the base game even if you don't have purchased the DLC (paywalling parts of the game that were previously available, basically)

right so the mod maker needs to update the mod sounds like

So you're suggesting that RW devs need to make any code changes to be backward compatible with all mods, everywhere...? Cuz that seems like a bit of an ask...

I have the Biotech dlc and children work pretty darned well, imho.

Nope, just please don't lock features behind a paywall, simple enough

it seems like when they do major game updates it breaks a lot of mods. I don't think these mod features are locked behind a paywall. I don't see why the person who created the mod couldn't correct this issue. I don't really know enough about it.

I don't think they banned children and these features from being used in mods?

I'll grant you it seems simple enough. But neither of us know what's really going on, right? Maybe the mod guy used some code in the base game that was released, but intended as a foundation for other changes in the base game later... So the mod guy is technically the one in the wrong in that situation as well. Regardless of any other cases you could find/describe, it almost doesn't matter. It's the modder's responsibility in 99% of those cases (which is kinda why ppl don't last long as modders).

Nope. There were no kids before Biotech, there were no systems in place for kids before Biotech. Biotech didn't lock anything "behind a paywall" it created a new system that didn't exist before.

You were using a mod before that created these systems you talk about, it sounds like that mod broke and those systems they made no longer function correctly now. It is up to that mod to fix their systems that they created that are no longer working. Except it sounds like the mod doesn't want to update and assumes everyone is using Biotech, which is up to those mod devs if they want to do that. There's nothing "hardcoded" here, the mechanics that control children are all in XML and easily modified or recreated.

IIRC RJW never really had a children system to begin with though. It had a pregnancy system, and then colonists pooped out full grown adult humans that were 0 years old. The recommended way to use the mod was to use the growth chamber mod to quickly grow them from 0 to 18 or whatever, or to use a different mod that added children (like the Babies and Children mod). It was never in the scope of RJW to add children mechanics, which is why the devs probably don't care to change anything now that Biotech is out.

You can disable the children in the settings before or after starting a game.

Bet'cha the issue *is* in the XML that Astasia mentions. Bet'cha there's crossover in the tags that modders/devs each used, causing the non-updated mod to completely misfire.

I can confirm this part.
Even loading screen tooltips told:
There are no babies in RJW, you need other mods to add babies.
When a "baby" was born, it was a full grown 0 yrs old adult, fully capable of everything.

I'm suggest to try some additional mods, if there is any 1.4 children mod in the workshop. B&c iirc was out of date back in 1.3, but children school learning was updated. I would start with that
Also you can try to look at the sub mods on RJW loverslab page, maybe they have stg.
Last thing, you can try to rummage the posts on RJW forum, and hope sbody shared a link.
