Ideal pawn stats for mechanitor?
I have 7 pawns in my current colony, finally destroyed that ship from the beginning not knowing it had a mechlink quest with virtually no threat.

Is there any particular passions or skills that work with mechanitor best? IE do I need like smithing or crafting or anything in particular, and is it better to have a good ranged or good melee skill with them?

Smithing is the skill they need to build/repair the mechs
also they cant be psychically deaf

I prefer a passionate crafter with melee skill. Mechanitors are "expensive" enough of a target that I want mine wearing a shield belt.

you certainly want crafting, double passion would be ideal but take what you can get.

the suggestion for melee so they get a shield belt is a decent idea, but mine stay behind cover as them going down is a problem. same reason its probably less ideal to put it on a vampire as they cant be controlled during deathrest. its really more of an issue when they are a part of your defenses.
You want someone who is unlikely to get mental breaks too, don't forget that you can modify their genetics to better suit the role if you don't have preferred xenotypes.

What are good 'xenotypes' or traits to have on one then?

Iron Willed and Tough are, as always, S-tier traits.

As for genes, I tend to stick to the survival ones. Fireproof, Robust, Cold/Heat Tolerant (biome applicable), maybe toxic immunity if I have metabolism left over (depends on the negatives of course).

For RP purposes I like alcohol dependency. The beer drinking robo-daddy engineer trope just amuses me.

Edit: there are plenty of bionics that help cover some genetic functions. Immuno-kidneys, tox-lungs, armorskin, healing accelerator, painstopper... etc. Mix and match to fit your needs.

Is a royal/psycaster a good combo with mechanitor? My only person with double flame/burning passion for crafting is also my psycaster, currently Acolyte rank.

yes, but keep in mind you probably only want 1 mechanitor total vs lots of nobles
