Underground base
I just started playing. Can you actually build an underground base in vanilla Rimworld, I know there is drilling but can you dig up an area to create like a bunker in a way?

Rimworld has no z-levels, just the floor, the walls and invisible roof/overhang.
You can dig sideways into a mountain for the bunker benefits.

You sure can, by digging into a hillside / mountain, just read up on Insect Infestations so you're prepared. But a viable base build choice :steamhappy:

Edit: you won't be able to have multiple sublevels etc

I hope one day when the developer decides to make a vanilla DLC add on for underground bases for vanilla soon TM:steamsad:

As Pyro said, there`s only one floor in Rimworld, the only way to have an underground base is a cave under mountain base. You cannot do it wherever, you need mountain over your head, but that roof is indestructible just as a bunker would want. You can check if the roof is hard roof/mountain with the show roofs toggle in the right bottom corner where all the toggles are.

You'd have better luck modding guns into Dwarf Fortress.

Hopefully one day, maybe even a modder might be able to write something up.

I'm always building under mountains, like @dot said - ensure you're under the mountain itself by use of the toggles and you'll be fine.

1# Know sooner or later you will have to deal with an insect infestation, so build with this in mind. I build so I can seal off areas of my base, with choke points, so I can then limit their spread and then kill them. They'll start to destroy items, furniture etc etc, where they spawn in, so spread out your assets and have a plan / resources to rebuild.

2# Fire will turn your rooms, and potentially your base, into an oven. So avoid having wooden walls / doors where you can. Fire will also spread through Vents in walls and also through heating up adjacent rooms. So be mindful if you're using fire to fight the infestation, and response times to a fire cause be electrical spark. At 235 °C (455 °F) rooms will start to ignite. Long before this your colonist will suffer heatstroke and burn injuries.

Other than that, have fun! 8)

The Deep Rim mod which I just started playing with, creates a second colony below your colony - but moving between the two is awkward though it does work. It's like having a second colony that's much easier to reach than using a caravan.

there is a z level mod for the previous versions, haven't seen or heard about a version for 1.4 but I haven't actively looked either.

I tried it a few years ago, I don't remember it working as well as most of us would have envisioned, you couldn't make guard towers that worked and so on. Each level was effectively a new settlement or map tile

Most my bases are underground. I have one patch of growing plots for items that won't grow in the Hydroponics ... the rest is all underground.

Just know, you have to have place where your pawns can go eat outside now and then, and lay in the sun ... otherwise they go stir crazy unless they are an "underworlder".
