Any ideas on different playstyles/scenarios to try?
So how are you guys playing the game??
I have the base game, played throughly and took spaceships off the planet a couple of times. I've had small and big colonies. I've made powerful cyborgs and cannibal doctors. I lived in the dessert and in the tundra. I consider myself kind of a vanilla expert.
The only mods I've been using are Stack XXL for hoarding and Mad Skills to max out everything because who doesn't like to see numbers go up, amirite?
I think my next playthrough I'll make a zoo. It must be fun to go around the planet trying to get new species to skin and make armchairs.
So how are you guys playing the game?? Any ideas to try or mods to shake things up a little?? Is the dlc worth it??? Seems too expensive

the dlcs are pretty much on the same levels as mods (better implemented though). in the vanilla enviroment the dlcs are by no means necessary but they can be somewhat gatekeeping the access to mods in some cases
but wether or not buying them follows the same rules adding mods follow - lean about the content and if it fits get it.

as for what to play for me its usually:

#1 find a mod with an intresting theme and enough decent chunk of content of its own.
#2 think of a generic story that fits that "core"mod
#3 think of some details to add to the story
#4 add mods adding those details
#5 bugfixing/stability
#6 play story

steps 3 and 4 can be repeated as many times as you like

I'm currently doing a pollution run with mechanitors, no freezing and no foreign dumping, where I aim to capture wasters to give their pollution-resistant genes to my pawns, in a race against the clock and the inevitable corruption of the entire biome.

When it comes to mods, I'm mostly waiting on SOS2 to be updated because 1.4 hit slightly before I ever got to endgame so I never experienced the Rimworld FTL even though I had the mod.

A scenario I've had a lot of fun with was the feralisk jungle in the alpha animals / alpha biomes mod. It's basically a suicidal biome full of predatory spiders, that are so agressive they hunt all the wildlife in the first few days, and if by then you haven't closed off your entire base you become permanently hunted by the entire map, because you're the only prey left in it. It's quite a unique take on the game where you don't have to deal with raids (or traders) quite as much because they usually get eaten the second they enter the map (and you get to loot everything they had during the night if you manage to sneak past the sleeping spiders), but if anything manages to breach your walls, you can be sure dozens of giant spiders will come flooding in with whoever was attacking and murder you.

Go with the zoo idea and pick up Hospitality. Lots of cute animals, like a petting zoo. Or...With Biotech genetics and some mods like the forbidden one, you could make it a heavy petting zoo.
