How good is devilstrand as a material?
I have a massive devilstrand farm going right now, but as it takes like a year to grow i was wondering if its worth it. My map is generally pretty warm, we've never had frostbite (although heatstroke almost ended us early on), so i was thinking that it could make for a pretty good anti-heat material if i made my peoples clothes out of it. Alternatively i could farm cotton, but im unsure if that would be too good since i feel like its quick to grow, but is somehow lesser than devilstrand.

Devilstrand is the best fabric you can get aside from stuff like hyperweave and thrumbofur which are all in short supply or hard to obtain.

There's a reason why devilstrand is part of the mid to late game meta. Devilstrand pants, button down shirts, devilstrand dusters, flak vest and flak helmet is the goto mid game strategy. Amazing protection both vs heat (fire) as well as against sharp attack and is decently good in both insulation vs heat and cold.

There's no reason not to use it if you can and want that extra bit of protection. It's best if only your best crafter works it though since the protective properties really only come into play when you get excellent quality clothing which allow it to provide slight to moderate protection vs sharp attacks. (as compared to cloth which does nothing)

In a nutshell: devilstrand is fire resistant/bullet resistant with decent heat insulation. It is no exaggeration that devilstrand shirts/pants under armor may be the difference between getting a bruise and losing a limb. Yes it's worth the growing time, but I'd recommend growing it indoors with a sunlamp... weather can suck on the long growing crops.

Devilstrand is very much worth growing if you can spare the manpower. It is much better than cloth and the vast majority of leathers for both damage protection and heat insulation. The only realistically farmable material better than it is thrumbofur, but that has lower heat insulation which is what it sounds like you are after. Hyperweave is the "best" material generally but you are very unlikely to see much of it. So yes, most people will eventually grow devilstrand to make clothes out of in their playthroughs.

Devilstrand is so powerful that dusters made from the stuff can beat out flak jackets.
So yeah. Cotton is fine for recipes that require it but for clothes I think of it as one of the last options, you have nothing better to make clothes out of.

It has very high armor values and I think in Vanilla it might be the one of the best materials that you can reliably get in huge amounts. If your biome allows for it's growth you should definitly do so and make pants, button-down shirts and dusters for all your pawns. It is also a useful material for building sandbags as it doesn't catch fire.

If I remember correctly, cloth is better as a cash crop if you're just selling it as is. A number of traders will buy it that won't buy other textiles, so you can offload it quicker as well.

But yeah, like everyone else has said, devilstrand is relatively easy to get a hold of as long as you have more than enough planters and good soil to feed your colony. Unless you're using some mod to grow it or something, hyperweave only shows up on some traders and usually in small to modest amounts, while thrumbofur requires getting lucky and having thrumbos show up and then getting them downed without ruining that lovely fur. Or farming them to breed for their fur, which will take a long time and a lot of food. Either way, kind of unreliable and best to save for equipping only a few colonists or making a few pieces of super-snazzy furniture while devilstrand can equip most of it not your entire colony within a couple years. Can even research devilstrand right off the bat as a neolithic tribe if you want. The fact it's very flame-resistant for countering pesky mechanoids and imps is the icing on the cake.
