When a visitor has a ? they are willing to trade. Select your most social pawn then right click the visitor and select initiate trade (or something like that).

You need orbital something to put down and make sure the area it covers are inside the stuff you want to sell to land merchants. A com console let's you trade with ships arriving.

If your trading with a caravan, select a pawn and then right click the visitor with the yellow "?" on them to trade.
If your trading with an orbital beacon;
1) Setup your beacon over your stockpile of things you want to trade.
2) Make a comms console (think this still applies in A14) to get the orbital trade requests and right click it with a pawn to trade.
3) Make sure your scenario supports orbital/trading if you want to orbital/trade (if it doesn't, it will say it doesn't on the initial scenario page).

It should be pretty self explanatory once you see the trade screen, but if not;
1) on the row of the item you want to buy, click the arrow next to it pointing LEFT.
2) on the row of the item you want to sell, click the arrow next to it pointing RIGHT.
3) you can click repeatedly OR drag the item count value left and right to indicate how many you want to buy/sell.
4) Accept at the bottom when happy with the deal.

Once the trade is complete the goods will appear near the caravan trader, or randomly via orbital drop pods very close to your base.

I am not sure if this has to be research but it should be in "Misc" menu when available

PS. orbital trade requires access to the sky to drop in goods, so make sure it does. The stockpile and beacon can be indoors (and since a lot of goods degrade exposed to the elements, I'd recommend it) but at least some of the orbital trade beacon's area must be exposed to orbit.

P.S. the beacon transmits co-ordinates so be advised some raiders may use it to drop down on your colony from space. Beware the slavers from space...

Mountains or roof does not protect you from pods that drops on top of your colony, well at least in previous versions... I have not seen pods dropping on top of my colony yet. There was a shield mod in alpha 12 that protects your from overhead pods (including whatever your purchase, if the slave you purchase hit that shield, RIP).

areas with thick rock roof above them cant be dropped in with raiders or shelled by mortars. However thin rock roofs and constructed ones doesnt protect.
