Quick observation - torch lamps are OP.
Why? If you are not concerned about huge beautification, they provide heat and light, and are very easy to replenish from your regular tree farm. They will always keep the room temp a few degrees over the outside one, and your colonists will never complain about being in the darkness.

Have I forgotten to mention that they are really easy to maintain?

EDIT: Oh, yeah - and they also give your colony that Minecraft-torchy style feel. Not big on Minecraft really, but it sure as hell works...

EDIT 2: Let's face it - you are hitting 2 stones with one bird by using them :D

Try using them on an ice sheet.

And neither will anyone else in their right mind :p

Precisely :D Although ice sheet is kind of interesting for a solo guy start. You might just make it :)

hardly, there's so much that has to be done quickly before your limited supply of wood runs out, that you NEED the extra hands to get started....and as a emergency rations.

Of course the Harsh Desert is worse IMO. Cold can be countered by getting/stealing parkas and a wood fire of last resort, but intense heat NEEDS refrigeration to counter since stripping naked and staying deep in a cave system can only do so much.

In a harsh desert I would never use them - as well as in some other climates.
