why is deep mining tech so weird in the tech tree?
After all this time, it does not make sense that they are divided, nor that scanning is past drilling. So either put scanning as requirement for the drill, so people can scan before the drill exists, or just add research points and make them one tech.

as far as I know there is always a reason behind everything in this game. If you dont see this reason that you dont know how to play game ;-)

I know its for regular rocks, but who really needs that? Never in any of my games did I needed to mine regular rock. And also it is quite illogical to mine something unfound. A good way would be giving any sufrace ore deposit also a deep deposit below, so that when the miner is unocked, people can mine the materials.

Never done a ice sheet challenge i hear. Basically you may need it on maps that doesn't have a lot of mountains/hills/etc (or none if we are talking ice sheet). Sure you can trade for it instead, but that's expensive and limited.

P.S For the crossed out parts, deep drills apparently don't give rock chunks on ice anymore.

It's for stone mining. Placing a deep drill inside of a room with a stonecutters table substantially reduces labor and movement time spent gather/mining rocks from elsewhere and bringing them home. It can be faster to mine up new rocks than to fetch them from relatively distant locations on the map. It is almost always faster to mine up new rocks than to mine rocks from nearby mountains.

A deep drill + stonecutters table + art table can produce a steady supply of high quality art pieces for beautification and sale with minimal labor spent moving resources across the map.

It's less for acquisition of higher value materials at that point and more for streamlining your base.

^ This.

Drill is the logical first choice because you get some benefit of the drill without a scanner.
But a scanner without a drill is quite literally worthless.

a true ice sheet challange will make you starve before you even mine enough stone, given you even would have enough to build power supply, a drill and a farm. and if you bring enough preparation it's not truly a challange anymore.

Its not your first concern that is true. But eventually you want to upgrade your settlement to stone, since steel and wood is both rare on a ice sheet map (and burnable) and without a deep drill you have no stone (no stone chunks, hills, mountains, etc, on a ice sheet map).

P.S Nevermind, deep drills apparently don't give rock chunks on ice anymore.
