A little help with heat/cold retention in buildings?
Can anyone help explain the retention of heat and cold in buildings for me? Do different materials resist heat or cold better? Do auto-doors prevent less heat/cold from escaping? One would expext that if you build your compound under a mountain that the temperatures would be quite cold reguardless of a heat wave or not, however it seems to make no difference. Am I utilizing the overhead mountain wrong?

Double thickness walls help a bit. Airlocks (moreso with autodoors) help out a lot. Temps inside mountains should be more stabilized compared to the outside temps (i.e. less extreme either way), although I think this is bugged in A14 (believe it was also new to A14.)

A15 also introduces a new non-powered way to slightly cool, which should help deal with heat waves.

Materials make no difference at all. Temperature equalization happens through walls and ceilings. An impassable cell behind a wall (i.e. double thick wall or even a nutrient paste dispenser) will count as outdoors temperature but with 50% heat transfer rate.

Overhead mountain is bugged in alpha14 and isn't properly counted. It will change in alpha15.

I built my large freezer and stockpile zone half into a mountain because of the map gen being really really weird and the mountain taking ver half the map. but for some reason even with 2 coolers set to -20f nothing is frozen, i'm honestly thinking about just sticking to the frozen areas as those seem to have a few advantages i would love.

Do you have your coolers venting directly outside? Lack of proper exhaust venting is usually the reason coolers aren't working well. That and oversized cooler per cooling unit.

Yeah they're venting the right way i think its just the room is too big, i tend to kill traders that come by in the mid game because welllll. fat loot.

I'm having the same issue with my freezer in the mountain. 10 coolers set to -5 C and one crippling amount of power later, still hovering around 10 C when no-one walks through the doors (made sure to check at night while colonists sleep, as well as throughout the day)

I just put coolers everywhere. Look at the power cost - it's only 20 watts!! A lightbulb that lights up the room takes 150 watts!! Make sure that it's covering around 20 squares total.

There is a mod that balances the wattage too.

Not sure if you're joking... 20watts is the low power (when it is not cooling), 200watts is what is uses while cooling.

Is the overhead mountain roof tile bugged for storing heat, or what am I missing? 10 coolers fluxuated the room temperature around 10c, and half that many coolers did the same amount

Not joking. If you put them per room then you never need to lower the temperature to go to 200 Watts.

Overhead mountain is not really the best way to exhaust the coolers. If they are all exhausting down a path to the outside you may be overwhelming the heat that can be quickly dissipated. It is best to have them exhaust DIRECTLY to open air. A quick way to check if bad exhaust is the problem is to hover just behind the coolers exhaust side. How hot is that?

100-110 C on the exhaust side of the coolers

Exhaust is your problem then. Perhaps a bigger path out to fresh air will help.

I have 3 unroofed tiles down that exhaust port, shouldn't that be plenty? or do you mean just wider
