Can I set up my generators...
...so that they only kick on if my batteries run out of juice? A sort of "automatic backup"?

There's a mod for that with an emergency power feature for batteries..

Well you can store batteries in a secluded area then attach it in to the main power supply when needed :P

I store batteries on both end of the conduit and generally try to wire the conduit in a ring, so a break somewhere won't result in a complete power outage (if at all).

No, but you can have someone turn the generators on for backup power when the battereis run down.

In general, I'd suggest isolateing your batteries in units of 2 by switches, so you've got 2 batteries in the circut at a time with the rest charged and unplugged. This reduces damage in the event of a short and means you'd still have batteries that aren't empty.

There's also a mod that adds circut breakers and fuses to reduce the damage from shorts.

Don't have one. Just if you have a means to do so, make a big loop through your complex ending the conduit where it begins. A complete circle. If it breaks anywhere along that circle than there shouldn't be any item impacted.

I have especially dug tunnels in mountain redoubts in order to complete that.

Also, if you have a hydroponics room, connect a battery there. If the main power goes off, hydro will run off the battery for awhile.

where do you put the switches? in between every single battery?
Miradus Aug 22, 2016 @ 2:55pm
I don't use any switches.

Okay, let me try this a different way ...

-----X-----

The X is your battery.

The --- is your conduit.

If the conduit breaks in front of the battery, you lose power to the battery.

But if the power is coming from both directions in the conduit, then it would have to break at both locations (front and back of the X) in order to cut power.

Make more sense?

Yeah, yours are prone to risk that way. Spread the conduit out in a big circle throughout your base, and distribute batteries all along that ring.

So I need to do power conduits like this right? then they won't lose power if one explodes??

i find batteries are less likely to explode when placed inside a room. Sometimes, they will still break, but rarely explode (unless there is some sort of strange raging fire). As a result, I will make a small room where I can get a person to walk thru and fix the batteries - if needed, but i have them in a roofted room.

Yeah! Only on a bigger scale sweeping through your whole base is what I do.

But the circular ring is the key. If they are hooked in from both directions then a single break won't cut anything off from power.
