How does one mine?
It just says must designate impassable mineral rocks when I try to mine anything.

What are you clicking on that you can't mine? Are you clicking on the rock chunks? If so, those need to be cut at a stonecutter's table to be further processed into blocks. Mining is for cutting into the large mountain/hill areas on the map. Perhaps your map doesn't have any of those?

aaaaahh... I had no idea you could cut into that and I had misunderstood it all. Still I have one more question how do you get iron? I couldnt find anything called iron ore or similiar anywhere on the map.

Look for Compacted Steel.

I am having the same problem and I am in the tutorial. I try to drag the mining too over the area by the tutorial arrow and I have the same error message as Loka. Help please!

Check the terrain on the world map.
I am pretty sure you select "impassable" terrain.
Select somthing else like a mountain or hills...

Thank you Brassqund but, the tutorial says to choose flat, temperate and fertile terrain. I could start again and try a hilly terrain.

If this is a flat terrain, that was not the problem.
...
Did the tutorial ask you to mine?
I hate this tutorial because it FORCE you to do exactly what it wants.
Nothing more, nothing less.
If the tutorial didn't say to mine, you are not going to be able to mine.
Sometime, that make you stuck for a reason or an other because they force you
to do something you can't actually do.

Hello again Brassqund. There was a misleading arrow on the screen, always pointing to the same rock. I scrolled out. Lo and behold the correct mining area came into view.
I am now making sandbags and waiting for my first enemy to arrive.
Thank you for your time. :-)
