What kind of Animals do you tame?
I prefer to tame alpacas for their wool, and once the population gets really high or im in need of meat badly ill slaughter some. But mostly I keep them around for their wool to make into clothes/sell.

I also keep Bears both as attack animals and haulers.

Those are really the only 2 that I keep around, for wool/food and attack animals/haulers.

Curious if people keep chickens/muffalo/wargs, etc...tell me why you keep those particular animals, whether it be for food, money, defense of your colony, etc

Yeah bear doesn't seem to be a joke, I had my first arm ripped off in the game tyring to tame one this verson...

it is nnot that they are weak. it is that they make gameplay complicated at the moment.

1 bonded "combat" animal dies and your combat animals turn into a man hunter pack inside your base. game over.
and thats cause of friendly fire etc..

there is no real advantage to go melee+ combat pets instead of all just ranged.
thats the game atm.
ranged > melee.

muffalos for their milk and wool(i sell their babies and they're worth quite a bunch, sadly they eat A LOT of hay so you have to stock up thousands of hay for the winter)
chickens for meat(they dont consume a lot of hay so i can make a barn full of them)
bears for selling and defending my colonists
timber wolves were nice till my tamer found a bear and got bonded together... then i sold the wolves lol they just eat my fresh game

For me, Hare in starting, because they make more baby and it's give some money to sell it, but it's seem the hare have a problem, i have make a test with fruit, human versus hare, and the hare eat 4 x more than an human, so they are not good if you have not hay,

One animal i have tested and loved to use it with me in fight it's the caribou, they are fast and turn around the ennemies by behing, so you have free line of sight to shoot ennemies,

some animal i want to tame or buy (on the boreal forest) it's the mega thing, they have a good power but i have never view her in a fight,

but the one i want the most, i don't remember her name it's a rare animal they come time to time on my land, they look at a big bird all in white, they are very big and beautiful and they have a big attack and they have a big intelligence, but they go away too fast and no time to tame it, and they make fear, because if i try to send the bad people to try to tame it and the animal attack, it's sure my avatar are death ha ha ha, but this animal are the most beatiful and strong i have view in the game for now, but they are very very rare...

Pets can be very effective in a fight.
They mostly a nuisance when you dont need them, and a pity to manage (master, unmaster...) but they have saved my day too.

If you defenses are down for some reasons, (turrets destroyed, most traps disarmed, half colony in medbeds...) and a big raid is coming, animals can save the base.

Ive had that happening to me, gave all trained pets to one single guy (boars, bears, elephants, wargs and some more, like 50 pets) hidding him and the horde behind a wall, let the rangeds do what they could and run back, then unleashed the horde...

It was a beauty to watch, the raid was utterly destroyed in no time, like in 5 seconds, at pretty much no cost.

You are limited in colonists, somewhat in turrets and traps, but pets are endless and almost free if not on extreme climate.

I tried a bear but I shot him in the butt as often as I shot the enemy.

Wargs, those things are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ savage as hell!

A "man hunter" pack of those showed up on my map... and things proceeded to go very bad... about 10 dead wargs, 3 dead colonist, 2 lost arms, and a lost leg later.... I got myself a breeding pair of Wargs! (Also I never realized my bumbling oaf of a miner had 17 skill in Animals, go figure).

Those things have multiplied... and... pretty much run the colony now. Got a pack of 6 now, they eat any meat my 2 remaining colonists can get, i stopped bothering with graves cause they just devour corpses so fast, corpses of raiders and tribals they maul to death instantly....

My two remaining colonists now survive on whatever scraps of raw meat the Wargs leave for them... those Wargs constantly get hungry and go after any animals on the map... My colony is dieing but those Wargs are going to inherit it....

Dogs for hauling, in the late game thrumbos for create best carnage.
Miradus Aug 18, 2016 @ 5:25pm
A thrumbo wiped out half my base when I tried to kill it. I did eventually kill it, but at the cost of two important citizens and a leg.

Sold the horn for hauling bots to replace the missing citizens, which was a terrible idea in the long run. Hauling bots (from a mod) haul very fast but they are no replacement for a citizen who can do other things AND fight.

Cats. If you create a zone where only the storage areas are forbidden they will hunt one small animal a day to feed on, giving you a continuous supply of meat and fur.
I just set up an area outside the colony for them to sleep so they don't bond any colonists.
They'll starve during winter though so you have to give them some kibble.

i find that bears are best to stay with their master, they're very good meat shields and dont die easily
its basically a distraction and can fight melee enemies who got close too, pretty good imo
other animals though... yeah they do nothing at all... other than dogs which they haul and help which is nice
