large hills or mountanious? pros cons?
need some help for deciding, large hills seem to not be a big difference compared to small hills and mountanious has lots of hills but has no open spaces it seems, just trying to decide which one to do a long campaign with, any advice? pros cons

Large hills is probably the best to start off with imo.

Mining takes an awful long time and so beginning in a mountanous zone isn't as great. Small hills do not usually provide a lot of places to mine in the long run and you will find that you're running short on steel and components really fast.

Mountains offer the best defense if you go for a mostly undeground base.
Many ways to tunnel the enemy raids into only one entrance.
Almost immune to sieges and mortars.

If you want an outdoor or mixed base, large hills are probably better while offering some defenses.

Nothing says you have to go underground from the start either, mining takes time.
Both will provide lots of mats.

Any underground room is subject to infestation, that is a major drawback...Still, not very hard when you understand how to deal with it.

I like mountains personnally.

I prefer a mix of mountains and regular base. I like to start building on the outside then start coring myway into a mountain.

Having to deal with infestations is a pain, especially if it could pop up ANYWHERE in your base if its all in a mountain. Of course, by the time you get an infestation it should not be a problem.

After playing for a while it doesn't matter where you start as long as you get your defences up.

I don't know how to deal with infestations lol. Which is why I don't like underground bases.

For infestation

If you have many coolers, freeze them to death (around -20 c)
With many heaters, heat them (never tried this one)
Burn them with molotovs (can be quite painfull depending on the room they are)

What works 100% of the time is exploiting bugs reluctance to go more than 30 40 squares away from hive.
As soon as infestation pops, pause game, draft everyone away, set big interdiction zone all around hives.
Dont use melee or pets, unless you ready to lose them.
With interdiction zone, the non usefull for fight can work safely if you want.
Set all ranged with most clear line from where bugs will come 40 50 squares away from hive. (force open doors all the way), go agro some with 1 fast guy with a shield.
Your ranged line will shoot them to death.
If some approach too much, stop fire and back, they will go back to hive.
Repeat until all bugs are dead.
If needed, undraft everyone and let them eat, sleep, joy etc.
Next day, kill the hives with melee.
With some micro, you can beat infestation with no injury at all.
