Corn. You get so much of it, and it lasts ages

Rice for fast food, corn overall if you have the time and fertility, potatoes if you are trying to grow in crap soil.

The answer to this question is a little complicated as it's dependent on a couple of factors:
- Length of Growing Season:
- How much farmland that you have available
- How fertile your soil is: gravel slows down growth while rich soil speeds up growth - biggest factor

- Potato: Medium growth time, yields 8 per plant , medium rot time, can't be eaten raw, not as affected by soil quality

- Rice: Fast grow time, yield 6 per plant ,medium rot time, can't be eaten raw, highly affected by soil quality

- Strawberries: Fast grow time, yields 6 per plant, short rot time, can be eaten raw, not as affected by soil quality but still more then potatoes are

-Corn: Long grow time, yields 22 per plant, long rot time, can be eaten raw, highly affected by soil quality

Assuming that you just have normal soil, year round growing, and lots of farmland, corn is the crop to grow as it will produce the most food in the long run.

However, if you're in a place like the desert or tundra where usable soil is low and you only have gravel to grow with then go with potatoes. They only get slowed by about 10% on gravel while corn and rice get slowed down by about 30%. On the other end of the spectrum, if you have lots of rich soil to use, go with corn and rice as they get a large boost in growth time (about 40%) while potatoes only get a 15% and strawberries a 24% boost respectively.

My strategy usually pairs up corn and rice for good growing biomes and potatoes and strawberries for poor growing ones. I start with rice/strawberries early on for their speed and once I have a decent stockpile, I switch to corn and potatoes respectively.

True, they're tasty as hell.

Corn is probably the best since it lasts the longest and can be eaten raw. They also have no pre-req skill either.

There isn't one best food. I plant strawberries and corn because they can be eaten raw w/o a debuff, and potatoes because they're plentiful and are good meal fodder. The berries/corn should overlap nicely grow cycle-wise to give you a ton of pickup food to eat, and you can make meals whenever out of the potatoes. Just make a big, refrigerated storage area w/ a stove right next to it (auto-doors help,) and you can stack food indefinitely.

If you have soil or rich soil, corn is best. Any soil below 100% fertility, potatoes are best. Hydroponics, rice is best. By best, I mean average daily yield for each square. Corn is the least labor intensive. Rice is the most. Strawberries are okay at the start if you can't forage from the map. Unless you're in mountain region and you really need the space, it's probably best to stick to corn because it's so much less labor intensive than the others. If you are at the end of your growing season, it's sometimes good to switch from planting corn to planting potatoes, but that's the only time I do.

I've played 40 hours in this game and didn't know. I feel stupid now (in moderate climate planted mostly potatoes because it's default). Thanks man!

Corn on good soil is king.

Whatever else I plant, I always make sure I plant corn.

Even though it lasts forever, you want to put it in some sort of stockpile with a roof over it. Corn is probably the only food you have that can expire in quality before it rots.

i personally prefer startiing strawberrys and rice, so i can build up electricity and electric stove. so i can skip fueled stove. ( assuming not tribal play )
strawberrys can be eaten raw without mood penalty. later on corn is godlike

Once you have a freezer up and running along with some greenhouses, I find Rice to be by far the best. That said, I typically have a grow zone for everything. Variety, spice, life, etc..
Miradus Sep 8, 2016 @ 7:47am
Yeah, you don't get game bonuses for variety (you should) but I really do enjoy seeing a wide spread of farms.

I prefer potatoes. They're robust and grow pretty quickly, so you get a steady supply of food. Corn yields more in the long-term, but takes longer to grow to 100%, so you might find yourself short of food before you can harvest corn.

I guess it should be easy enough for modding? I think tiered +2 mood bonuses, so
only one vegateble = no bonus
ate vegetables and meat = +2
2 diff vetegables + meat = +4
2 diff vegetables + 2 different meats = +6 etc. with duration of, I dunno, 3-4 hours? (amount of time you should get hungry after a meal), so you should have a small but noticable constant buff in mood if you provide various foods (to put it in perspective, cramped rooms give -3 mood, so you can compensate for this with 2 different vegetable crops and meat meals)
