Heat Insulation - Need some help about item stats
Hey there.

Something is bothering me about heat insulation regarding clothing. I'm playing a tribal start, in a relatively hot map, so heat is quite an issue. I started to craft Duster/Cowboy hats, but something is bothering me about the item stats...

1. Which material is the best to use for crafting heat insulating cloth, since I have no access to camelhair right now ?
I thought some tortoise leather/cobraskin would be best, but the stats are just not right...

2. When looking at the stats on a material, at first I thought that the higher the stats, the better. For example, cobraskin has 50% insulation - heat. Alpaca wool has 340%... wait, what ? You're telling me that WOOL is better against heat than cobraskin ?

So maybe I have it backward, and the lower the %, the better the insulation ? Which leads us to the next question...

3. I made two cowboy hats. One with tortoise leather (same insulation heat as cobraskin), and one with Alpaca wool. Both are of good quality. When I check the stats, Tortoise gives +4.2°C insulation heat, and Alpaca Wool gives +8°C...

So you're telling me that my cowboy hat made out of wool is better against heat ?
Maybe there's a mistake somewhere in the stats ? Because I also have a Synthread Cowboy Hat (good), which gives me +8°C insulation, when the item stat is supposed to be 125%. It just doesn't make any sense to me to get the same bonus as an item that's supposed to give 340%. Also, Muffalo wool gives +300%. An animal made to survive winter gives better stats against heat than a cobra craving for heat. I'm just lost...

Anyway, final question : What type of material do you use for your heat insulation clothing ? How hard is it for you to procure it ?

Thanks for any input.

With regards to heat insulation for wool its probably the same reason as to why deep desert tribes (such as the Berber tribes in the sahara) wear black (which absorbs light and heat) rather than white (which reflects), The heat isn't transferred as effectively through the clothing.

When it comes to making heat resistant clothing it depends where I have my colony, Mostly I use devilstrand (high damage resistance bonuses) if the max temperature isn't above 40C, if it is above that I tend to use muffalo wool or camelhair or just powerarmour instead. Dusters are great for temperate or boreal enviroments too thanks to the cold resistance.

Also, don't forget that cobras are cold blooded and thus want to absorb alot of heat so as to maintain the ideal body temperature and they hide if it gets too hot.

There is an issue, if you inspect gear that's currently worn you get different stats than you'd get when inspecting gear on the ground. Apparently the stats are correct when the item is on the ground. I haven't really looked into this so I don't know what's going on exactly.

Anyway, wool clothing is used in the deserts in real life. It insulates well, keeping you both warm AND cool since it slows down heat transfer both ways.

All right, thanks for your answers. I guess until I can get my hands on camelhair, Alpaca wool is OP \o/

You might want to stop getting your ideas on physics from rpgs. "Heat" and "Cold" do not exist IRL in the way you think they do.

Currently higher percent is always better, so cobraskin and tortoise leather are actually worst insulators by far. Camelhair and wool of all kinds are the best insulators.

On a hot map you want Cowboy Hats when you're in a hurry, and dusters eventually.

If your biome is not on the extreme end, leather and devilstrand will work fine. If you live in a very hot or cold biome, you want wool.

See http://rimworldwiki.com/wiki/Textiles for a quick overview. Checking and comparing this stuff ingame sure gets tedious fast.

This is a mod which fixes the Gear tab info buttons so you can check your individual pieces of apparel while equipped.

If you don't have wool. cloth will do for making dusters and cowboy hats.
