And they eat trees (not only but still...).
Megatherium is second but pretty hard too.
Elephants and bears are the most realistic strong pets to use...
By the time you would have a thrumbo trained, you could have 30 or so bears...
I'm sure they will get into the alcohol/drugs so keep them zoned out of that stuff.
Several of the smaller carnivores do very well for attack damage but they simply can't sponge as much incoming fire. If I didn't go for bears, I'd choose hordes of squirrels =).
Assuming you mean "overall usefullness" the Muffalo is the only animal that comes close to being able to "do it all." Its easy to train. Can tank lots of damage. Produces wool for clothing. Produces milk for meals. Can be fed grass. Can lift a lot of weight for caravans. The only thing it cannot do is haul... but all of the things it can do more than makes up for it. If you can have only one animal in a colony, that is the one that you would want.
I really wish they could be trained to haul. I was in NYC last week and saw a street performer in the park with a trained monkey. The monkey could be told to pick up his hat or move other small objects around. I don't anticipate the monkey could lift much weight but I think they should be trainable to be able to. Maybe they were kept that way for balance reasons but in terms of realism I'm on the "monkeys need a buff" team.
I think the hierarchy for large combat animals goes like:
Thrumbo > Elephant > Rhino > Bear > Panther/cougar > Warg > Wolf > Dog
I usually go with cougars or panthers. They are the fastest animals and typically my defenses are strong enough to where my animals are more of a clean up crew than anything else. And cougars and panthers can chase down that raider with the sniper rifle who was sitting all the way in the back of the fire fight.
