If you're running tribes, plant rice*, then hunt, hunt, hunt. Have your butcher set to slaughter endlessly, and use a campfire to make pemmican as often as it is available. Save the leathers for trading or upgrading your clothing (if you're starting in a cold biome).
* If you're in a cold biome make an enclosed room about 11x11 with two campfires in the middle (not built at the exat same time though!) and plant the rice around it. The reason for two campfires is so if one goes out, another is still working while you put together a new one. If the room gets too cold your plants all die. Research electricity as soon as you can. After that the direction to go gets pretty obvious. ;)
I mean, sure, err'body'll freak out a bit for a few days, but they'll get over it.....
And hey!
If one of 'em goes mental, it just means more food!
It's just called Pemmican IIRC. If you start as tribal you get it automatically, others need to research it.
Hydro is an "after the fact" setup. Unless you're starting on ice sheet or extreme desert. The energy costs are huge, and it will require at least 1500 metal to make a starting setup.
Raising chickens: Keep your fertilized eggs covered and warm. Keep other animals away from them, because they are tasty and tend to dissapear around other pets. You only need a few roosters. If you have a bunch, sluaghter the excess. Keep only the hens you can afford to feed, slughter the rest. When a chicken gets too old (around 5) slaughter it, and let a chick take it's place. (You can do this to younger hens too, I just try to keep it at my feed cap) Fortunately, chickens don't eat much (unlike that warg farm I tried, good for defense, bad for supplies) but when you get a lot of them, the cost adds up.
but for your question, farming the crops that takes 3 days would be OK. once you have enough of that, go for another crop that you like. i usually pick corn.
