Best defence against a pack of manhunting Wargs
My pawns laugh in the face of most rimworld threats at this point. Yet For the second time have been brought down by a group of manhunting Wargs. The first time I tried to fight them and was overun the second I tried to hunker down, but they broke down the doors and flooded the bunker.

Had I noticed early enough I probably could have kept up repairs to keep it from breaking down, but still.. I wonder if there is a better method than just waiting 'em out.

What's the best way to deal with the worst manhunting packs?

A turret or two along with a firing squad of colonists tend to take down manhunter packs quite well.

I can't say they're the exact same, but I have been able to take out entire packs of boomalopes before they had the chance to reach anyone. I don't think wargs will be that different.

Either you stay inside until they leave or use traps ( a lot).
Turrets will help too when they explode.

When i start to get established, i always go gor traps, they work wonder agaisnt everything if you have enough.

Cheers. I had a dozen traps zig zagging the corridor of an entrance but they only took down a single Warg. The rest of the pack seemed to avoid em.

I never used turrets because I didn't want t lose the XP and the friendly fire in game always put me off. But if I can blow the Wargs up by sacrificing a turret that sounds ideal.

Both of these games were Tribe starts, and in the latter I had only just finished researching electricity so was still a way from turrets.

Thanks for the advice though, that sounds plausable

The safest way of dealing with them is to not deal with them. Stay indoors and they'll eventually leave.

A setup like that (A14 game) had worked wonder for me against everything including huge manhunter pack (80+ animals), plus some trapped areas scattered around the map.

Behind the turrets there is a wall and doors, so mad animals stay and run all around the trapped area until they almost all dead.

Wow. Ok, yeah that looks like an effective set up. Cheers for the inspiration.

I feel sorry for the next pack of Wargs that come my way.

Just make sure you mark it as an area to leave unroofed. If not you will need more supports which will get in the way of turrets

Is it safe to have your pawns near turrets (within radius) as long as they are not between a turret and a target?

Yes, totally safe, unless the turret is about to explode, then you need to move fast 4 squares away.

Really appreciate the answers. Thanks

I just stay walled up and turn off the turrets so as not to lose them. I put a huge wall around my primary compounds (i play plains) This keeps them out so long as they don't see you come in or out. Wargs are a little too tough with my current set up.

i wish there were 5 wide gates because the colony i have uses 2 entrances that are 5x1 the game sent a really early warg pack and it almost killed one of my colonists. http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/492403625770909072/2778E7603013FEA0F58710AA3715F2A15A6BF087/

i have no components to build turrets, and no compound machinery what do i do

You bend over and take it like a man. (But no in all honesty there isnt enough detail and in that situation I would either bunker down and try to survive or just restart theres no shame in restarting you are not expected to survive in this game, just like darkest dungeon)

Have a "main entrance" to your base that is an un-obstructed path to the interior lined with traps an a few turrets. Most raids and manhunter packs will target this path. Place a door at the entrance and force it to stay open and only close it for manhunter packs that will bypass your defenses (i.e. those 20+ warg packs). Have several "exits" to your base that are stone doors built into the exterior wall. Use these as peek and shoot holes to thin out their numbers. If a pawn leaves the base, several manhunters will path to him, so use this to split their numbers and thin them out.

Once you have this strategy down, manhunter packs just become free food.
