Mine it, break down old buildings (walls and floors) and ship parts, melt down old weapons and chunks, trade, etc.

You can't make it, you can only mine it from Compacted Steel veins, or as Steelwind said, trade for it, destroy old structures made of it (sometimes you'll find walls or shacks made of steel) or smelt down (Electric Smelting is a research you can do) old items or steel chunks.

Also, deconstruct any crashed ship parts (large green/brown hunks), they give steel and components.

How do you get them to haul it back to your stockpile?

I have mined chunks, bits of broke pods set to haul lieing about al lover the place.
I have stockpiles set for steal,.steal slag and components.
I have people permanently set to haul as there highest priority.
But it always seem to be the one guy set to crafting - smelting scrap to make steal who does all the haulling which is terrible inefficient. Everyone else just seems to ignore it.
Don't know if its a range thing or what.

THe crafting guy is doing the hauling most likely because he needs the steel to make something. Haul is way the hell at the end. Switch to manual priorities and set someone to like 1 for hauling for a bit.

Increase Hauling priority?

I could be very wrong on this, but it sounds like you're not using manual priorities, so the crafter is trying to craft, has no materials, hauls materials, then finds he has materials, crafts, then has none to continue and hauls again.

These are exactly what you need to do - set to manual priorities.

The way manual priorities work are in a left-to-right, 1-4 system. The further left, the earlier the pawn will try to do the task; the higher the number, the earlier the pawn will do the task. If there's no number at all, the pawn won't do the task at all, period.

So, say you have Firefighting at 2 and Hauling at 1. Despite Firefighting coming first on the list from left to right, Hauling is a #1 priority - so it will come first.

It's a little bit of a hassle to do the first time around (especially since you have so many colonists), but it will GREATLY help with cleaning, hauling, and researching.

Is it weird that I can never find steel mining spots?
