Scared to try mods....justified?
I'm really tempted to try out some mods, but after seeing that a lot of them need updating when new game versions come out, and others that people have come to depend on (Prepare Carefully) are not currently being updated, I'm very worried that I'll try some out that I'll come to depend on, and they will be pulled out from under me when a new game version is released, or the mod author gets bored.

Do most mods need to be updated every time a new version comes out? If my favorite mod breaks, is it easy to "update" it yourself by going into the mod code and just changing one line that says which version it will work for, or something like that? Or is it very possible my favorite mod will just "disappear" sometime in the future?

I really don't want to fall in love with three different mods, then have all them ripped away, and then lose interest in playing the game (even just while waiting for the mods to be updated) because I've now lost all that functionality that I'm used to....doesn't feel worth it to me....

I'd rather wait for new functionality to be added to the game and get used to it then when I don't have to worry about losing it.

Am I making a mountain out of a mole hill here? Do only like 1% of mods break on new game versions? Thoughts?

Because this is currently an Alpha, usually the new version breaks most mods. For some it is indeed as easy as just changing the version, others need extensive reworks. That said this only usually happens with major version updates (13 to 14 for example) and those take a relatively long time between each one.

Second, Prepare Carefully actually has been updated for A14, it's just slightly buggy still.

While you might have some mods eventually not compatible that never get updated, this is the reality for a lot of games, sometimes authors just burn out or stop updating. You're denying yourself a lot of really fun content and cool options now worrying about potential consequences later.

Honestly on the forums there are a lot of legit mods. The update ones run very well the bets mod I am pushing really helps.

EdB Prepare Carefully

Customize your RimWorld colonists, choose your gear and prepare carefully for your crash landing. The mod's point-based system tries to balance things out so that you don't overdo it, but spend your available points on additional colonists, skill points, passions, resources, weapons and apparel. Or disable the point system and gear up your starting colonists however you like. Save your setup as a preset so that you can start your game the same way later.

Just download as many mods as you want, I have almost every single one in my list, I just swap them out when they dont work anymore or if another version comes out

Are you me?

I have the same exact feeling you do when it comes to this game's mods.

Many of them are great, and if their great, then usually the people who made them are great enough to update them.

I'm not gonna worry about that now since v.15 is nowhere in sight. Which means most mods are pretty good right now.

just look for mods that are well supported. look for mods with a lot of updates (especially new ones), thats a clear sign the mod author is active and will make his mod working again after it breaks

with mods game is much more funny and immersive, for example use "cras h landing" playing as a tribe on extreme desert.. force cannibal for them, choose new members for you colony or just make a grilled steaks from poor survivalist :) enjoy
