Changing Workshop Thumbnails for Scenarios?
I'm trying to change the thumbnail that appears on the browsing page for my Scenarios. I see that other people have done it, but I can't seem to figure it out. Can anyone help?

It seems that only works for actual mods, for the RimWorld Scenarios I don't think there is a way to access any asset/mod folders before uploading it.

Just figured it out.

How to change workshop thumbnails on mac.

  • In Finder menu Go > Library (hold alt) > Steam > usedata > find the folder with a bunch of files that look like "previewfile_719756139.jpg" that is your folder where the thumbnails are drawn from (the name of the folder will be a bunch of numbers, and sorting by date should help you find the right one faster)
  • Upload the image you want by renaming it to the same name as the one you want to replace (this can be difficult, but again use date or time to figure out which is which). Add an extra number or letter so theyre unique names
  • Remove the original file, either into another folder or the trash, doesn't matter.
  • Remove the extra character from the new file
  • Right click file > Get info > Lock
  • Update your mod/asset from in game.
This should have worked now, and the thumbnail should have changed. Now there is some extra work to do.
  • Right click file > Get info > unlock (THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT if you dont do this you won't be able to change any more thumbnails in the future.)

Thanks for this! Without changing the thumbnail, a given scenario looks pretty much identical to every other scenario from lists like "Most Recent".

However, there is a small but important caveat for those of us trying to do this on Windows. If we don't lock the file (Step 5), then RimWorld will overwrite our replacement thumbnail with the old default, instead of updating it like we want.

In Windows, we can not follow Step 5 exactly: "Right click file > Get info > Lock". Instead, we have to load the image into software that will lock the file for us. Sadly, most image editing software won't do this. Myself, I managed to do it by loading the image into LibreOffice Draw (aka, OpenOffice Draw), which is a free program. Then we go to the Scenario Editor and upload (or update) our scenario.

I found a much simpler way. Replace this other file instead, which is the source image the game takes to replace the file mentioned in the previous comments:

1) Navigate to the folder where RimWorld is installed: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\RimWorld

2) Replace the file named "ScenarioPreview". That's it!

Just beware that this image will be used for any future scenarios you upload.
