Multi-selecting several objects of the same type

I've watched several hours of YouTube videos and have seen people drag-selecting multiple trees at once and setting them to be chopped down. I've tried double-clicking, and I've also tried selecting one tree, and then drag-selecting from that, but It just doesn't work for me. I'm assuming there is some keyboard shortcut?

architect->orders->cut trees?
not sure there is a faster way, but this works...

When watching people play on YouTube the game looks pretty straightforward to play. However when you first load up your colony is confusing as hell to do even basic things!

This is a tutorial run on Alpha 13 but most of it still applies. The guy tends to ramble and get off subject but he does slow it down and explain what he is doing and why plus some side commentary on the game play so it is worth a run in the background while you play your first game.
