How do you get Plasteel
I've been waiting for it to drop in cargo pods and getting it from traders when they come by but this is taking forever. Is there a way to make it?

ive mined it out of a mountain before

Yeah, you can mine it, but it's fairly rare. Try strip mining the mountain areas around your map, you should come across some.

I've reached the point in my first fairly successful run-through (on rather low difficulty, with some reloading when RNG resulted in TPK events) where there's basically nothing to do other than figure out how to get the massive quantities of plasteel required for starship construction.

after combing through wikis, forums and the like, it seems the reliable method is to trade for it: make higher value trade goods from stuff you can get easily (art is generally the best right now, though devilsthread clothing might be worth it). it's the one option that's pretty much always open to you, though you're restricted to how often somebody comes through with plasteel to trade. (there's a mod that increases the frequency of trade ships to something other than "basically never")

RNG-dependant methods:
as mentioned, if you happen to find some of it, mining it is possible, but good luck finding some.
with the right tech, mechanoid corpses can be disassembled to get some
with the right tech plasteel weapons can be melted down to get some
if you open up ruins, you might find cryptosleep caskets, which can be disassembled to get some
if, by some magic of RNG, you start on a map with walls/floors made of plasteel, you could disassemble those

i think that's about it?

Thanks very much for your answers this is very helpful. I've been trying to finish an easy play through as well and actually build the ship. Cheers

Find yourself a mountain and dig, dig dig. Or if you're a lazy slob, just use development mode and spawn a bunch of parts or maybe the scenario editor to start with it. You know what, be a lazy slob, because save invalidations suck.

Kick up the difficulty and let the mechanoids bring it to you (in form of their bodies)...

I play with virtually every mod that is out and the vegetable garden mod has plasteel leaf and steel leaf. You can farm them but your workers need at least 10 in growing skill to do so. They also need at least 10 crafting to turn the leaf into plasteel at the electric smelting bench.

If this is too easy for you (personally I like playing with high difficulty, so it balances out as I need the plasteel and even more advanced resources to deal with powerful invasions), then try cupro pandas quarry mod.

This basically is a quarry which is mined by your colonists, it produces rock chunks and pretty much any other resource in the game, but slowly and randomly.

Final reccomendation is trade ships. Trading is the best non mod intensive way to obtain resources. In my game there is a bulk resources trader, where I can pretty much buy any raw material in bulk.

I usually specialise in crafting clothes and then trade those with anyone who will buy them, as well as fallen raiders weapons and clothes.... If you dont have the bulk resources trader it may be that you dont use the More Trade Ships mod which I use,I am not sure if it is in vanilla.

Basically.... Mod the hell out of this game is my reccomendation, the extra content it adds is amazing, and you can balance out any of the mods making things too easy bu turning up story teller difficulty or game difficulty at the start, depends on you.
It can be mined or gotten from robots, and weapons. I would try and get smelting, and machining quickly. machining for guns to kill raiders and open up the acient structures with hopefully robots and more, and smelting for the extra steel from slag, and crappy weapons of any type of materal.

Mechanoinds are the most reliable source for plasteel with the minor side effect of being a part of a killbot actively trying to brutally murder all living things on your colony.

Just a small correction, it's machining that makes guns, smithing is swords etc...
Machining bench is also used to disassemble mechanoids.
