Tips for the Toxic Fallout Event
I keep seeing people complaining about the Toxic Fallout and figured i'd give people some tips and advice on how to survive this annoying event.

Toxic fallout will hault any progress you have, kill most all of the plant life and animals, thats just something you sadly can't escape from. I don't think it's as OP if you know how to counter and play with it correctly. It sure is annoying though as it will take up to maximum a month of time that could be used for food collecting or building etc. Toxic build up is the sickness that occures when you aare exposed to the toxic air. One thing to note about it is when it gets to moderate or anything above, your colonists will have dementia, which I assume you know is permenate. Also moderate and intial toxic buildup will go away if you keep your people indoors for a few mintues and does not need to be treated by medicine.

Heres a bit more on toxic buildup side affects if you feel a need to know: http://rimworldwiki.com/wiki/Disease#Toxic_Buildup

All you have to do to keep your colonists alive is lock your colony members indoors. Keep them inside for aslong as possible. Only let them out for food if they don't have access to it. Make sure you feed them when they are starving to save food if you don't think you have enough. It will make them pissed but alive. For raids, what I have is 2 turrents on each side of my base to keep any threats before they make it to my colony. If the turrets fail, just get your guys in there to wipe them out and then back inside. If someone goes mental or dazed which will probably happen, knock them out as soon as possible before they get a hight amout of toxic buildup. But yeah, if you encounter toxic fallout again just use my survival tactic. First time I encountered this event I did this and every single one for my colonists survived with no highed than initial sickness.

If you have a mountain base or a base that is entirely inside, you will be safe from the fallout when they are in there but I assume you know that when you step outside, they will be affected by the fallout. Grow crops inside so you don't have a food shortage and keep the entrance extremely well gaurded in case of raids.

Hopefully that helped some people out who are knew to the game or don't know much about the toxic fallout event. If you have any other ways of countering this event I would be interested to hear them.

Have fun n' stuff lads!

Problem is when it occurs the first time, it doesn't have a warning system so if you have a villiage style build you are straight up screwed.

Personally I would save scum. I have no problem scumming a scummy game :)

Not sure what you mean by it doesn't have a warning system. Like the game didn't warn you it was occuring? Game gave me one and I got all my guys inside right then and there. Only letting them out to fight when the defenses fell or when they got starving.

Dev console. Kill. Best tip You can give anyone, ever for this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game-killer event.

This has spelled "game over" for 90% of my colonies for the past year. I hate "cheating" but this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing deserves to be wiped out of existance before it ever happens.

When it first happens be sure to keep an eye on the animals roaming around, once they start dropping make sure to send out haulers to collect them, irradiated meat is still meat...

Another good tip to handle toxic fallouts is to immediately go into the "restrictions tab", and then make that is as small as possible, make sure colonists and animals are allowed to only go in areas that are absolutely necessary.

You can also make covered walkways around your colony. Just set up pillars of wood along the walk way and build a roof. Then set allowed areas to only follow the walk ways. If your colonists are under any cover, they don't suffer from toxic buildup.

It really helps if your base is surrounded by a wall, that way you can just build a roof along the inside of the wall, as well as any extra walk ways to connect any separate buildings.

I'd recommend setting it up as a permanent in scenarios - it's been a pretty fun challenge so far.
For added fun, I combined it with only having one person and a dog.

I think someone added the idea to the Workshop shortly after I started.

I survived a toxic event earlier for the first time I encountered one. It wasn't that bad, they have to be outside a fair bit to get really sick. It lasted bloody ages though and was frustrating, but that's half the challenge really. I just killed my most useless colonist and ate him. We are all cannibals though so that is what I was planning to do anyway. I only recruited that spare guy as a backup emergency food plan.

I ended up roofing over most of my village the first time it happened. Lost about half the growing season. Thankfully I was playing as tribal, so I had lots pemmican stashed aside (if you are playing as tribal and don't have at least a thousand for a rainy day you are risking starvation anyways). I then made roofed pathways to places I planned on going and it was okay (you have to restrict people and animals to the roofed spots and paths). I suppose if it lasted long enough it could have gotten bad.

Roofed pathways is the way to do it.
I usually play open colonies, without perimeter walls, so I usually have defensive wall pieces along my path ways anyway. Repurpose the devilstrand greenhouse for food crops if the event triggers during growth season and the toxic fallout shouldn't have that much of an impact on your foodstores for winter.
People have died to the toxic fallout event? By the time you get one you should have at least a few months in food stored up. Just hole people up inside. How is this event a problem?

WHy did you post in this thread from 2 years ago?

The main thing you need to know to survive Toxic Fallout is how to use the Manage Areas and Restrict features to keep people and livestock under roofs most of the time. Keep them well-clothed if they must go outdoors. The other is just basic RimWorld strategy, which is to stock well up on food, because you never know when a 30-day toxic fallout might come and effectively demolish your first-year colony. Personally I just disable the event because I hate dealing with it and don't mind cheating. Yay customizability!
