They'll also opt for raw a lot over meals, even when the food doesn't give them a debuff (like corn and berries).
Meals offer more nutrition (and, depending on the meal type, a mood buff), so the AI is supposed to go for them first.
Note that colonists coosing raw berries and raw corn over nutrient paste is WAD and not a bug. Raw meat - that would be a bug, but I have tried but not been able to reproduce it. If you have a cook stove, and cook meals, colonists eat them as expected. Maybe somewhere in the files nutrient paste was made too repugnant.
Just using berries and rice to make simple meals. And it's not a constant thing, just random - most of the time, yes, they'll eat simple meals...
But randomly, they'll opt for berries instead, even when there's an unoccupied stack of simple meals nearby (I specify unoccupied, as I know it'll sometimes divert people if someone else is already interacting with a stack).
I even wondered if it had to do with cooking level, but I only have one person cooking.
I've noticed the animals will eat whatever they damn please if they have access to the freezers but i dont mind that
