Managing Night Owls
So there are times right before going to sleep, that some colonists get cuaght up on a task and go to sleep later, and as such they wake up later, though on the next day they go to sleep at the same time as everyone else I think.

If that's the case, how can I manage a night owl so he's always awake during the night and asleep during the day, without me having to constantly disturb his sleep to wake up him during the night?

I usually only set his go to bed hours, as in I dont set him to sleep for 8 hours, I just pick the 2-3 hours I want him to look to be going to sleep, not sure its a fix but it seems to work for me mostly.

Under Restrict you can set times.

restrictions tab. set him to sleep during the day stay awake at night. he won't be able to properly socialize tho..

oh my goodness, i didnt even know that tab existed! Thanks very much!!

So.. about setting their schedules, by default they dont have any joy time, but they'll still have strong "needs" to go cloud watching, walking or relaxing. Is that considered joy time?

Should I be assigning them joy time, and is 8 hours too much sleeping time?

Yes all that stuff is joy time. If set to anything they will do whatever they need to do to get to good levels of everything. Joy time is specifically "go fill your joy bar, now".

Try it and see, bed quality is a factor here.

By default they only have "Sleep" and "Anything" times set. So they do both work and joy in their "Anything" time. You can change that to a more strict schedule, but you have to be a bit more careful.

Also remember the things you set here arent definite rules, they are times slots the pawn is to check against when deciding what to do next, hence putting sleep for 2-3 hours means you should catch them checking for a job and they go "ooh sleep" if you then follow those 2-3 hours with "anything" theyll wake up when they are ready.

When you say wake up when ready, does that mean they'll still sleep 8 hours? (I'm guessing so, based on sometimes seeing some colonists wake up later than others)
If I just completely remove sleep from the schedule, will they still head to sleep when needed?

I'm guessing setting sleep/joy schedules is good for having them socializing together and all, but other than that (and for night owls), if they sleep on their own, is it even worth setting sleep schedules?

They sleep until their Sleep Bar is filled. You'll find that in the needs tab of each pawn.

Do you know if that means they'll wait until they're pissed off from being tired before going to sleep?
nazerick Jul 20, 2016 @ 6:14am
basically if you leave it unrestricted they just do what they want, when they want. some will be lazy, others will work themselves into a psychotic episode and start murdering their fellow colonists. In other words setting a strict schedule with a workaholic might be the right move.

You can still sociallize with night owls. Just have to set at least one joy either at start or end.

Once it is within their sleep time schedule, they do a check against their sleep needs. I think if they are above the right most line in the bar they will start another job (or job segment is probably the better term) then check again after that. Rinse, repeat.

This is why you'll see weird sleeping scheules with people who have recently been in a medical bed for a while, their sleep bar will be pretty full during what should be their sleep time.

I may be wrong about where on their sleep bar they decide it is ok to head to bed. I've not really monitored super closely, it could be that once they are at below 40%, 50%, etc. they'll decide to head to bed. But overall the mechanic seems to work something like that.

** Just saw your post black, thanks!

@ Nazerick Indeed, I set it to the hour before the night owl's sleepy time
