How do you get them to build a roof?
Is there a way to force them to build it?

The building is about 16 tiles long and four tiles wide.

It is correctly zoned to have a roof. They just refuse to build it. Hovering over, it says "Unroofed (35)."

Thanks for any help.

Make sure you have the materials, it's what that is. I think by default you have steel walls. You can run out of steel very quickly making a large structure. If you click on the "walls" button, there should be an option for wood, but I think the roof is still steel. I don't know for sure, would prefer wooden shingles.

I'm pretty sure roofing does NOT use materials at all.

I hope so. But that number OP posted sounds like resources short.

It does not, and it is automatic (except for big zones), unless you specifically forbidden it.

Many people have been reporting roof construction glitches. In my playtime so far, I've had a few tiny sections that the colonists took ages to fill, so it's probably something a little wonky with the AI, (especially since this is the first time constructed roofing has been implemented).

They finally put the roof on three buildings, and all at the same time. One building had been since the first couple minutes of the game.

No idea what prompted them.

Perhaps, and the only thing I could think, would be that they ran out of construction jobs.

Hey I found the solution.

It seems the roof-building is triggered only upon completion of an enclosed "room". So, in my case, I had expanded the room, and 20% of it was left unroofed. I deconstructed the door, then rebuilt it. This triggers a room check, and the builder immediately started roofing the new section.

Solution : make a hole in your room and then close it to trigger the roof build.

Priority of construction works :

Deconstruct objects < build objects < deconstuct roof < build roof

Don't remember where I'm need to place "build & deconstruct floor".

So either wait until all your walls&objects constructed, either temporary stop some building works (forbide them).

As corisai said, roof building is low priority. What you can do to "force" it, other than clicking everywhere to prioritize it, is to lock them in the room. Since it's likely all they can do, they'll build the roof. Well unless they're tired, then they might just sleep on the ground...

Sorry to revive dead thread, but I noticed no one has mentioned this yet (or perhaps it's been added later as an update.

When building a large room (10+ x 10+ tiles) I had the same problem the roof being missing exactly in the middle and I absolutely couldn't get them to build one.

I made a tiny room in the middle and result! - they built a roof over it. Then I removed the tiny room which I no longer needed, and as soon as the last bit of wall was taken down, I got a notification that 'a part of your roof has collapsed because it's too far from any supporting structure'.

This was a big help because at least I now know that roofs need support and if you have large sections without any walls/doors, it might not be able to support a roof.

Thought it would help because I've not seen this elsewhere.

Actually, build roofs is high priority. But they would start building roofs only once a room is enclosed. Use "expand build roof area" tool to force them doing it ASAP.

You can only have a roof out to I believe 6 tiles from a wall, otherwise it'll collapse. This is especially important when mining; forget to replace mined out rock with support walls and you'll have squashed pawns in short order.

Reviving old thread again. I made the mistake of building the cooler before the wall and forgetting you need both on the same tile, so there was a gap in my room where the cooler was.
That made them only build 40% of the roof. Was driving me mad for a while but there you go. That can happen if you're dumb like me :D

A. This probably deserved its own thread, dont necro :)

B. Unless you are using a mod, a cooler definitely does NOT require a wall to build it. I always specifically don't build a wall where I want a cooler, so that they don't have to waste time and resources building it and then tearing down it down.
