They can be handy to help you survie harsh winters or blights followed by solar flares.
But really if the RNG is going to screw you, it will screw you, like starting with a solar flare, with a Zzzzzzzzz event before the flare ends which leads stright into a solar eclipse X.x
which happened to me along with a raid and a bug infestation meaning no turrets, all doors having to be opened manualy (bad when they are made of granet) and my entire colony being trapped between people with guns and giant killer bugs as all the hydroponics shut down, the fridges failed and... basicly the colony died. either murdered by bugs that popped up beside them while they were sleeping, shot by raiders, caught in fires or dieing in the berserk fits that followed. v.v
Basicly the RNG can shaft you no mater what >>
though bugs aren't as bad now, and you can always put power lines down all over the place to stop them pulling crap like popping up in bed rooms.
