Anyone managed an Ice Sheet tribal start?
I'm curious, but not quite masochistic enough to do so myself.

Sure, any of the hostile world starts are doable. The trick is to setup over farmable land ASAP then spread out your base from there. It is quite the challenge though as being on a map that will kill you just for being outside leaves little room for error or mishap.

I have... and died pretty quickly.
There's just no way to get enough food to survive.... zilch... none.. .nada... zero!
Even if I went cannibal... which I didn't... it wouldn't matter.

"Farmable Land" on Tribal start is not available... the temperature is too cold to grow anything.. and you have no access to electricity OR sun lamps.... don't even speak of hydroponics...

You "Could" try to cannibal your way out of it... (*i will try this some time) but the problem is getting enough "raiders" to show up (they are your food source so duh!)..

I'm thinking one of the only ways to do it is to build an igloo around a steam vent and squat there. God help you, though, when you run out of wood. :D

That's not as viable as before because raiders aren't supposed to show up when they won't survive the trip. It wasn't too bad a13 as you could get an almost constant supply of frozen humans of various types.

Hrm, missed the Tribal part. Interesting. I'd have to try it just to watch them popsickle. :p

Actually with torches and a steam geyser I can get taters to grow. Barely. It would certainly be a challenge though. You would need to setup outposts at any geyser close enough to gravel to farm and even with wood/food rationing it would suck to be them.

But, again, God help you when you run out of wood.

That's the underlying problem with ice sheet. There is absolutely no wood at all except what you manage to buy/grow. Wood is absolutely essential to tribals.

It would be a different kind of challenge that is for sure. I am thinking a cannibal start would be needed. With all the pets and most of the tribe turned to food and a nice big free freezer outside you might stand a chance. :p

That's a big M Maybe. A13 ideas no longer apply as they generally require a stream of dumbass raiders to freeze to death outside. This is suppoed to be removed.

Hmm, lone cannibal survivor on an ice sheet. Well lone survivor after all the rest freeze to death anyway. Shouldn't take long to verify if I can get a harvest in before I die. :)

I always enjoyed colonist ice sheet games, but I always RP'd that my colonists homed in on an empty but still viable research station of some kind. That was about the only way I could keep them alive for any real length of time.

So I made a scenario with cannibal to make it easier to test this.

Started with a tribe of cannibals
Picked one to be chief (10++ mine and 6+ grow but crappy cooking and crafting and stuff)
Wall off some gravel around a geyser and against a mountain/hill.
Kill all but one pet (a timber wolf)
Setup storage inside for all but food/medicine/corpses
Setup storage outside for food.medicine/corpses and cover it
Have the chief setup tater and tree plots (torches will let them run at around 18%)
Have chief carve out some living space to balance out the heat from the geyser
Send the other four out mining for resources and restrict them from food supply
Haul back all the iron they dig out as they slowly die off from starvation and the elements
Get bit by friggin snowrabbit
Get infected
Wanderer joins... can't doctor

Bastards. I think it is doable though. I would even go so far as to say you could do it with a full crew as long as they were all cannibals and you weren't shy about knocking one off for dinner if it came to it.

OK so this thread got me fired up to try this, lol. Doing it on Cass basebuilder for the first go just to see if it is logistically doable. Some notes... there are animals on the map but most of them are nasty (polar bears, wolves, etc) and you do get visitors so at the very least you could trade or hunt to supplement your survival.
