Removing mud, etc, from inside caves

I am digging a living place inside a mountain, and ran across mud. I can't build on it and can't figure out how to remove it. Do I have to change my plans?

Mud is not removable in vanilla. Get the vegetable garden mod and you can replace it with dirt.

A new tool was added in this version -- the moisture pump. Try it out! It might take a while, but it should get rid of that mud.
