Will supporters get steam key?
I bought this game a while ago seeing as it took ages to come to steam. Will I also get a steam key? If not I'm sure I'll end up buying it again anyway but it is kind of a jerk move to say "thanks for supporting me, eat ♥♥♥♥"

Tynan can not say we get a steam key if we bought it on his website because it will be against the aggrement he made with valve. So if you ask him he have to say "i can not promise it"
BUT he have said he can generate as many keys he want. so i'm 99.99% sure we get one.

Exactly, if he can generate as many keys as he wants, I don't get why he cant "promise" a key. Sounds pretty suspicious and I have a feeling many of us will be double paying

I think you've basically answered your own question. Why does Valve not allow this? Because developers don't have to follow through on those promises.

As I recall, the problem with promising Steam keys (and Valve's policy against it) originated when other developers promised Steam keys in exchange for votes on Greenlight.

Blame Digital Homicide et al. for Steam policies like these.

Well hopefully we will receive keys, great game either way. Just so happens it has the most finicky odd little developer who constantly overcomplicates things. I remember him saying he was bringing the game to steam 3 or 4 times before and kept changing his mind because "steam users are mean and will stress me out" bs

if you bought the game before 4 November 2014 you will receive a steam key as stated in the faq. I bought my copy long before that date and would be very pissed off if they do not keep their promise because that was one of the reasons I supported them early on.

Yeah, the main issue is for people who bought it after. He said he can get unlimited keys but steam wont let him promise that backers who pre ordered after that date will get one, and he could very well use that as an excuse to double charge
RemingtonRyder Jul 3, 2016 @ 7:31pm
Tynan's a pretty decent guy. I don't think he would double charge. In any case, it would be very bad publicity for players to complain about having to buy the game again on Steam to get the Steam version.

He's probably going to net a lot of sales from customers who are new to the game or who have held off on buying the game because they want the Steam version.

He certainly will. But 2 things about tynan.

1. He is kind of crazy/finicky
2. He wants to milk rimworld for all its worth. He can give whatever excuse he wants but I know for a fact he held of putting rimworld on steam for so long because he got 100% profit on his site while steam takes a share. He loves his money, so double charging may not be too far fetched

whats wrong with wanting to keep all the profits? its HIS work, not steams, from what i understand..steam reached out to him..and if he chose not to put his work on steam wtf are you to judge him?..you make a good game and put it up on steam lol. reviews in steam do matter thou.. a lot of nit picky children..doesnt like 1 thing..negative review..dont like a game in 20 min..negative review..and so on and on..if a game does well outside of steam..and majority like it..why move it to steam? i guarantee you..he will make a lot more on steam than by its own..so money doesnt seem like the issue.troll

He certainly will make more on steam, however he only decided to move to Steam because his game was fading without it. He is very money driven even though he has already made a killing off this game. That's why it wouldn't surprise me if he double charged.

And you're right. Steam reviews do matter. But if your game doesn't suck, you have nothing g to fear. I know this game is good so why is he so paranoid? Does he plan on abandoning and that's why he is worried about poor reviews? Doesn't make much sense.

He is a great game dev but also a bit of a mad man. If you don't know that then you haven't been following this game for too long. He goes from giving up on the game, to doing a Ste release, to saying he won't be releasing on steam because he is scared of criticism. You can't say his sudden changes aaren't odd.

You're worse than the Bethesda fan boys who say that sky rim had no bugs because it was a good game

To be honest, with the quality of Rimworld and the work that Tynan and his small crew have put into this game, I have no problem double paying. Actually, I will not even ask about/for a 'free' key for the steam version.

I'm all for supporting indie developers, especially one who consistently delivers on their product, and continually improves the game over a long period of time.. I've been a follower of Rimworld since like Alpha 4.. I fully trust in Tynan to deliver a 'finished' product, eventually.. but I will enjoy the early access ride for as long as it continues.

For all the people saying Tynan is all about money, personally having played for so long I understand that money to him is important, sure. He has to support himself and a crew of people working on the game.. however the most important aspect to him is creating a product that people will enjoy.

He takes community suggestions to heart, and implements a lot of what modders/community members suggest. That was the main reason of not implementing a steam version earlier then he did. He was more worried of getting bad reviews while he was away from the game for a few months, while his team ran the game for him while he was busy with other facets of his own life.

Same here I took thr plunge because i was promised a steam key in 2015..I hope he follows through..a bit late, but he better .
This could be the reason he delayed it for so long,Maybe he expects a backlash from steam users for making a promise he cant keep,Anything is possible.

Yeah, he seems to fear any sort of backlash in a big way. So much so he kept going to put the game on steam but kept delaying because "steam users give bad reviews". Strange operator for sure but one hell of a game

Tynan was going to release on Steam last year but he was approaching burnout and needed to take some time off.

And since taking a break right after release was a bad idea - hell, a lot of people claimed that RimWorld was abandoned during his break - he decided to postpone until next year.

Good call, in my opinion, because since last year there's been an influx of new features and polish into the game, which can only help with the review ratings.

I get that you're anxious about getting a Steam key for the game. I hope that everyone who has already supported the game gets one. Tynan has put some thought and effort into making sure that people can get a Steam key. Good thing too, because manually distributing keys is a pain in the butt. Well, not much, but it would be much easier if there was an automated system, right? :)
