Medieval Vanilla and Recreation
Hi,

I'm currently doing a medieval playthrough and have gotten to the point where expectations are sky high and now my colonist's are starting to get bored because of a lacking variety in recreation. Is there anyway to remove this since they're asking for tv, telescopes and the lot, which being medieval, I can't offer them. I'm looking for anything that could either replace or alter recreation options.

Telescopes are pretty close to medieval, it's just glass in a tube. Early 1600s IIRC.

You could probably make do with drugs/beer and chocolate though instead. Between hoopstone, ur, table, meditative, chemical and food based joy, that should be enough. I typically don't have any chemical or food joy in my colonies and it's not a problem, but they also aren't quite as easy to manage as TV/telescope.

The medieval times mod might have some more recreation options, I can't see ever doing a "medieval run" without that mod. There's also various smaller mods on the workshop that add new recreation type, like Jecrell has a writing/reading mod that I think might fit well.

You can also probably change the recreation rates in the scenario settings. In an existing save you can copy scenario conditions over using notepad++, near the top of the save is the active scenario and any changes you make will take effect in that save.

I agree with the telescope bit, sadly can't make that happen, at least with my knowledge. I am using the Medieval Times mod with the Medieval Vanilla mod which removes post-medieval techs. It adds a writing desk which does offer recreational options. Jecrell's mod sounds like something to try.

The thing with notepad++ also seems a good alternative to solving it.

I've tried looking for non-technology reliant rec mods but haven't been able to find much of use. Perhaps I'm using the wrong keywords to search?

Anyway, thanks for a helpful post!

You only need 5-6 types of recreation.

Relaxing socially
Going for a walk
Praying/meditating
Chess
Throwing things
Viewing art

This is all vanilla. There are a few others, but shouldn't be necessary. That's perfectly doable in a medieval playthrough.

Rimwriter seems to work. The colonist's are eagerly writing scrolls, journals and books for others to read. Also my Rhino's decided it was a good enough looking library to make babies in. All in all, it seems a succes. It also helps that they are no longer starving after last winter's early onset cold snap. No longer receiving the need more rec variety or boredom notes.

I play Medieval Times games all the time. I even made a custom scenario with it.

In the Medieval Times mod you have a few extra recreation types on top of the vanilla ones. The hearth can be used as a recreation type (stocking fire) as can the desk (reading story). I think you can even write books at the desk too. Or was it the crafting table? I cannot recall. Some overlooked recreation types are viewing art and visiting tombs.

If you still can't find enough ways to entertain your colonists there's always food to mitigate some of the debbie downers. Cheese and the stews give mod boosts. Weak stew is essentially nutrient paste but without the mood malus. Hearty stew is a better version of the fine meal. Jerked meat, dried agave and dried berries are better forms of pemmican.
