Have you harvested the cotton yet?
All the cotton I gathered simply vanished because there was no zone to store it. I guess some other things I produced also vanished. What a weird system where stuff simply vanishes. You'd think it would lay there rotting like those darn corpses do. Kind of frustrating. Now I know where those items went to when I couldn't find them in storage.
It does lay there deteriorating. However, in inclement weather like rain or snow, some materials deteriorate in just a few days.
Normally when you harvest a Cotton plant, it drops Cloth to the ground ready for someone to haul it - same as when harvesting Rice or Corn, and it drops the harvested vegetables on the ground in the fields.
You certain you're not using mods? It may be worth using Steam to verify the game cache files.
It actually is under the conditions OP stated... cloth will deteriorate like many other things when not under a roof... that's prolly where his other materials went to; there's surprisingly few things that can lay outside in torrential rain forever ;)
After doing this for a few days, he should have gained enough skill to actually succeed once in a while, which would make it start showing up.
That could be what happened.
I think this is probably the answer. Part of my team was off on a trading mission and I think the guys left behind were missing some skills. I'd say this is the most probable explanation.
