You can also make sure to remove unfinished items from all stockpiles, so they'll get dropped at the workbench. Makes it quick to pick the job back up instead of running back and forth. Don't bother giving them storage as that just means your pawns have to waste extra time starting and stopping jobs.
if the same unfinished item stays around for too long you probably stopped a specific task or the same pawn is to busy over stuff. for the prior you can effectivly only cancel the unfinished item or set the same task again. for the latter adjust your work priorites or force them to do the task
They shouldn't normally be hauled though, if you have colonist hauling unfinished things away from the bench then something sounds broken. Either you canceled the bill creating an orphaned item that will never be finished (in which case you click on it and press cancel to get half the materials back), or you have a mod breaking the way the workbench reserves the unfinished products. Normally unfinished items are left on the bench or moved onto the floor in front of the bench if something else takes priority and gets worked on, they are just left there forever as long as the bill exists.
This is why I only queue up a single piece of art at a time. Otherwise I end up with unfinished art all over the place.
Each bench can only have 1 pawn work at any bill at any time but when you have multiple benches with the same work order it can happen that a work order is completed while another bench and pawn is still trying to complete their order resulting in an unfinished item that will never be completed until the quota is increased.
You can get around this by using the do x times function as it works per bench.
Another way to avoid it is to simply never duplicate 'do until x orders' for the same item on multiple benches. Only use that order on a single bench to prevent this from happening.
Not necessarily. If you have a pawn working on an item and you send them off onto the world map or anesthetize them for surgery another pawn will start the job all over again, which leaves you with the first pawns work partially completed and hauled to storage. Once that pawn is back/awake you will need to que the item back up again so that they can finish the worked they started.
