Bear Fighting?
Anyone have any tips on fighting bears/wargs/wolves? Or possibly taming them? They are eating all of the wild herbavores and it's winter. Thoughts?

If hunting one by one - simple really. Two armed guys. One who is faster stands closer to the bear than one with better shooting skill and better weapons. Second one shoots the bear, first one kites. Usually a couple of shots is enough to hit a leg and just safely kite it to death.

Taming is always dangerous, because close range, can be safer with heavy armor and good melee weapon +preferably good melee skill.

Wolves, wargs and cougars - much more dangerous to hunt because of higher speed. Better to take them out with 3-4 colonists at once minimum to ensure it can't reach you fast enough to deal damage. Because if it does there will be friendly fire.

Nuke the bears from orbit?

I had a couple raiders attack me, one of them had a grenade belt. Turned out to be useful for hunting large animals. Wait until night-time so the animal stops and goes to sleep, then grenade/shoot it. Makes it much easier than daytime.

That said grenades are dangerous as hell when fighting moving targets. Too easy to get caught in your own blast radius. :P

You could just pick up the animal corpses after they've had their snack...they do all the hunting for you.

This. Except for cats eating rats, no animal will fully consume the corpse. You'll get a little less meat out of it because it may be missing some parts, but it's still there.

Also, it's possible in some maps for the corspe to start rotting and the carnivore eats it anyway. Then you watch bear die because it got food poisoning. More free meat!

Assault rifle or charge rifle, or anything ranged really. Make a shack with space inside and a single door. Go shoot the bear from a distance and hightail it back to the hut, stand in the doorway and fire away. When the bear gets too close, duck inside. It'll pound on the door a few times but quickly give up and wander away. Once it's far enough away, slip back into the doorway and resume firing, going back inside if you need to, then hop back out again.... until dead.

If you're using primative weapons still... I've found the pila is the god of primative ranged weapons. It's slooooow to wind up and release, but it hits like a truck.

Safari, that is, a bunch of shooters bunched together, but minus the jeep. There's no vehicles to ride shotgun in Rimworld. Fire a volley and kite back a few tile. Repeat until dead.

IF you're going for capture... I don't have definite answer. It's more or less just use less stronger ranged weapon until beast is downed not killed. Then build wooden 1x1 hut with a animal sleeping area in it and one door. Select any colonist and right click on downed beast to rescue. If you did this right, the animal will just sit tight inside the 1x1 cube. If the animal goes manhunter, your tamer will be standing right at the door so his life isn't in danger. The animal will bash the door but at least tamer will have a head start running back to base.

Please note, if the beast is carniverous and is hungry, it'll attack as soon as the door opens. When it starves to 0 hunger, it'll bash the wall or door untill freed and leave the map.

Edit: if you have sleeping spots inside your base, forbid all the door and try again. If that still fails, try checking whether everyone is allowed outside and the 1x1 hut zoned to home.
