Joking aside, it seems you are fine with growing hay to feed your animals. I could warn you that it may get harder if you plan on upgrading your walls/weapons/armour or increase your colony's pop. Than again, I know nothing of what you wanted to do with that playthrough.
Anyway, I'm not feeding them, ITS A FREE FARM! I digress.
Its a tactic that can work great if the map conditions allow it. Not all map conditions do however, myself I alternate between free range and barn, to give the grass a chance to grow back and protect my animals when needed
Depends on the animal, chickens are very viable for food, once they're in larger flocks, it can get to the point where you're not only using eggs for colonist meals, but also for kibble (combined with hay or corn) to feed your chickens and other animals.
