Floor Beauty
Something I've noticed is that carpet ends up overwriting the beauty of whatever you build it on.
This seems a little counter intuitive as it means there is no point doing anything under it. Is it instead possible to mod this in some way that you have the various layers of beauty adding to each other on floors. Or at least carpet stacking with the tiles/smoothed stone underneath it.

Also why is smoothed stone considered higher beauty than tiles?

Well, it makes sense. If I have beautiful hardwood floors in my living room with a fine finish, then throw some carpet over it, you aren't likely to comment on what is underneath. If it was all rickety underneath and holes where you could fall in, that would be a different story, but.

As for modding, not sure. I haven't done anything beyond add new items that are similar in nature to others, but it might be possible for the game to check ahead of time what you are laying it on and add a bonus or something, but I can't say with any certainty.

Regarding smooth stone, I guess it just is a matter of opinion. IMO it is fine, though the fact it is free and better than most (not all) does seem strange, though it takes a lot of time I guess. But if you have concrete it can seem very industrial / uninviting and I guess the idea behind sterile is that it is meant for cleanliness but not homeliness - the way most people don't think of hospitals as pretty, but rather sanitary.

The tiled versions of stones is where it becomes a toss up. I know tiles can take more maintenance, the cracks can gather dirt and the like, become uneven etc. Where the smooth would be like having a polished marble floor (or whatever material) that was completely smooth. I dunno, just my thoughts.

The only thing better than smoothed stone is pure gold floors.... So yeah there is better, but it's a little impractical unless you use the deep drill mod to get that much gold. What's underneath the carpet also still counts towards the rooms value, and I can say from experience that you can normally feel what's underneat carpet if it's stone/wood/etc. It does matter.

The Sterile I totally get, and agree with. It has it's own value instead of beauty, and trade offs between things are nice. If Carpet instead gave a little comfort along with a little beauty while tiles were all beauty but no comfort that would be a good trade off.

I see what you mean about what is under being more comfortable, which I think makes sense ot matter - just not beauty. It likely *looks* the same regardless of what is under. Stone floors and a thin carpet feels a lot less good on the feet though. But yeah, having some comfort thrown in for carpet would be nice. Also having devilstrand carpet being better would make sense (and synth possibly, though not sure it would matter as much).
I think the carpet tiles in Rimwolrd aren´t moveable carpets laid on an existing floor, but is meant as permanently installed carpeting.
Other Carpets would be more like furniture.

Rugs. there's a mod which adds rugs. It depends on the CCL mod that isn't updated yet.

@OP

In real life you have padding under carpet, so you wouldnt be able to tell unless it was poor quality or poorly installed...

Or I guess you were a linebacker and jumping around hard.

Properly installed carpet has padding/foam under it.
As far as smoothstone having higher beauty.. Kinda irritates me personally.
I don't like the look of smoothstone because of the various "pebbles" that are lodged in it, clearly visible.
Heh, ocd.

But I do like the idea of layered floors.
You can already lay floor tiles over each other, but with no added effect..

Metal tile + Carpet = Warmth/insulation boost to room?

First thing I thought was colonists complaining because you dont have heated floors 8-/

Stone is more likely to insulate better than metal :P
But yea that would be a cool way to do it if you got a secondary bonus.

Crazy.
Here I thought I use to own a construction company.
Could've swore we used metal heating tiles for heated floors in bathrooms.. gotta lay off the smokeleaf, I do. :)

Note the key word there. 'Heating'. If you aren't putting power into it to heat or running hot water underneath it, it's not going to be as good.
You are talking apples & oranges with your heating tiles. Since that's not insulating, but a very low power heater. Which would also be a cool flooring option especially if it kept working after you added carpet.

Totally my bad. I thought I said "Heated Metal Tile".
I only said metal.

Now that I could get behind :)

I heard some people throw down salt (obviously really cheap mineral salt) to insulate. Or massive tubs of oil underneath the flooring, haha.
