Concrete or wooden floor (if you're in forest biomes)

Play on ice sheet.

you still would have far less by playing in desert maps too

Or place growth area and set for roses. That your planters will automatically cut threes and saw roses every summer. (works nice under wind machines)

You want to have absolutely no trees on your map? You don't need wood for anything?! :O

What do you really need wood for after the early game? Most things can be made of metal or stone.

Another solution would be to make mostly unsupported roofs to make dark zones that once chopped trees wont grow in.

Things that don't need to be made out of stone or precious metal. To make them from wood.
Anything that's far away from combat zones or are a hazard in some way.
If you use wood as the stuff material, it will cost a lot less and take much less time to complete.

I guess I've played on maps where wood is the scarce resource and stone is plentiful too much.

I've never really played on anything but mountaineous temperate forest maps.
I always keep a good stock of wood and I make sure to have a growing area for trees that I can set to allow sowing when needed.
Aside from what's in my previous reply I also use wood to make emergency structures, because it's the fastest to build.

Why not just close off the section you want gone, and light it on fire.
On one-hand, Smokey The Bear will be super pissed, but on the other it'll be clear.
