Worth getting a faction to be your ally?
Thinking on gifting my unneeded animals to a close faction to be my ally.

Are they worth? Do they actually help during raids?

Having nearby factions as allies is a huge boon. Trade caravans instead of raids gives access to much needed sources of materials, weapons, armor, food, and other goods that can bolster your economy. It's also a great place to sell all of the guns and armor littering up your storage house.

Allied factions will regularly send support in combat as well. Even tribal allies are a great asset against mechanoids. The catch is that it's inconsistent unless you call them and request immediate military aid, which costs relation points with them.

They can be quite helpful. You'll be able to use a comms console to ask allies to send specific trade caravans which will arrive in a few days and can be quite helpful (Excess of corn plz send bulk goods trader to buy it kthx), and sometimes when you have a raid show up, allies will send their own counter-raid to assist you.

Then again sometimes if there's, say, a caravan on the map that's at war with the ally, they'll decide to attack the caravan instead. Then it gets awkward.

Yes, it is worth improving relations with all neutral Factions and eventually becoming allies.
But, not for the sake of assistance during raids.
The best way they can assist you is by becoming one less Faction that may raid you ;)

Plus, there's always a moment sometimes when you could really use a shipment of something you're temporarily short of and a friendly Faction can help you bridge the gap in production.

Thanks all, the next time I have 20+ baby animals/turkeys in my pen I don't want or need that should put me over the 75 threshold to my closest neutral faction.

I've never tested this but there is a tip when loading that says that you will get more caravans if you're allies with more factions. Not sure how true that is but it's worth noting.
