Genes - what i dont get.
Can some1 explain to me like im 5 how doeas someone make their custom gene population and keep the genes you combine in a gene bank.
I made my custom game tribe start with pawns made with specific genes. The problem is when i get babies in the colony between my ppl they dont inherit the genes. WHY? how am i supoose to keep a custom colony going if my babys become baseline paws. What is the point in genes if i can only make them one time and the pray for rng to give me the genes back i want or my colony reverts back to baseline pawns. This is suppose to work this way?

Did you check the option to make the genes inheritable when you made your xenohumans?

Something tells me you forgot to click the little 'inherit' toggle at the bottom right :lunar2019laughingpig:

Babies can inherit up to 5(?) genes from their parents, meaning that complex genelines will breakdown over time without genetic engineering intervention.

You can extract individual genes or groups of genes and reconstruct permanent custom genes that can be freely applied to unit again. The catch is that this will put the pawn into a coma for 2 days, which shouldn't be an issue when applying them to children.

Genes are more or less free to extract every 25 days, any more than that will kill a pawn. So just keep extracting until you have the genes you want and sell the genes you don't want.

Alternatively there is an injector gene that allows a pawn to give their custom genes to another pawn. Vampires start with this trait but it can be added to any colonist and is actually a great way to share expensive custom genes.

Oh I didn't know you could only have up to 5 genes at a time? I wish it was more since many of the xenohumans have many more inheritable genes by default and you don't see pigmen devolve back into smooth skins despite their lack of genetic engineering.

It's possible that I'm mistaken or that I have various options not turned on. I just haven't seen kids inherit their parents full custom genes. Seems to max out at ~5 genes inherited.

I get this but genes like body skin and color should not be in this pool as well, only more complex genes as i under stand but that s not the case.
The second problem is when you start with even 5 ppl having 12 complexity in genes is unplayeble because after 10 gens extractions i cant replicate my genes which is realy bad rng or my paws might die faster then im able to replicate even 1 pawn. I already have 3 kids and non can have the full set of parents genes which make this a bit hit and miss mechanic.

Third mind scratching moment is that dirtmoles witout ideology dont get tunneler meme ( you cant plant fungus) wich makes them kind off stupid in my opinion to play.

While it might not be your thing these situations can easily be fixed by devmode. Turn on dev mode, go to bio tab, click on baseliner or whatever xeno they got. Check devmode edit. Add the xeno genes you are missing.

Luckily genes aren't unique, all of them can be acquired again from other sources, so even if you lose a colonist, you will be able to get the genes you used to build them again, and recreate your custom genes.

Take this with a grain of salt, but I feel like some genes are more likely to be extracted than others. I've extracted Poor Plants like 50 times but I only managed to pull out Strong Melee Damage twice. You may have used a number of rarer genes that are just going to be harder to extract.

On the plus side, you only need to extract them once. Once you have the extract you can reuse it indefinitely with no degradation.

Pretty sure if you have a real Pigskin mate with a real Pigskin then the baby will always be a Pigskin and inherit all the standard genes. If you mix species then you get hybrids, and hybrids only inherit a portion of their parents genes. If you start with 2 hybrids then there may be some limitations on how much can be passed on.

I've personally had a Dirtmole mate with a Highmate and got more than 5 genes. Though Highmates are engineered and don't pass on their special genes. What I got was basically a Dirtmole without the UV weakness or mining boost, the base human skin color was passed over from the Highmate but overridden by the dirtmole skin color.

So the child has:
Improved Melee damage
Gray eyes
Near vision
Dark vision
Dark-reddish hair (from his mother)
Light gray skin
Skin color (this was visible while she was pregnant and disappeared when born)

Yes, this is the least enjoyable feature of this expansion. You can't sustain a custom xenotype, while the built in ones do it automatically. I'm really hoping someone will make a mod for this soon, 'cause many people want to play their own custom xenotype.

i was talking about cutom made race with inherit on. it counts body shapes and colors as rare genes so your baby will not be as one of your kind and always baseline ( i dont think this is working as intended)

yes, this is what it seems to be the issue.

ok we are playing a difefrent game then:)
1. I couldn find any random pawn that had the genes i need to sustain my bloodline. raids mostly consist of wasters baseline and yakkin and they do not have the genes i need.
2. extracted genes that i combined and used on a kid vannished and i didnt have them back in gene bank for sure.

thats like playing with god mode on, i can just stop playing at this point as well.

You may be experiencing a mod conflict or something similar then. The Gene Assembler is explicit that it does not consume genepacks when combining genes. All of the xenogenes that I've made haven't consumed the genepacks either.

I'm not sure which genes you're looking for, but they may be on units such as genies, imps, hassar, dirtmoles, highmates, pigmen, or sanguines. For all I know, some genes may be restricted to just being available through quests.

I kinda was hoping to be able to breed my xenohumans to create the ultimate abomination ... guess I'll have to wait for mods to allow that hehe
