Gene Extractor, can't figure it out?

Been playing with the new DLC for a while now, and can't figure out how Gene Extractors work. I've got one built, but all that shows up in the gene banks are skin color gene packs. I'm extracting genes from non-baseline humans, so that's not the issue. Is it random? Am I just unlucky in what genepacks are getting extracted? having a hard time figuring out this new genetics system, if anyone has figured anything out please post it here for me.

Alright, on my eighth extraction I got a fire spewing gene, I guess I was just unlucky for a while
