Children are not learning
A child joined my colony, but i don't get it, how i can make it learn. I have a school, someone for childcare and the child has not to do other work. Now the child is only wandering around and has one mental breakdown after another...
What do i overlook?

Children are not learning? Sounds like an American problem.

Looking for an accurate tutorial for how black boards and school desks work as well.

I haven't had a kid join yet, but if anime is any indication you need to put them in a giant combat machine instead of sending them to school. Unless it's a ninja school or superhero school or something.

children learn like a pawn does recreation, there are several things they might want to do, scribble on the floor, follow another pawn, play outside.

One of these possibilities is sitting in the desk along with an adult pawn and they will teach the children for a while, the duration seems to be the same as the other activities.

Does this happen spontaneously? Do I not need to assign the adult for teaching? Will he volunteer to do this on his spare time?

make sure they are assigned to jobs. dont uncheck all jobs because they have no skills.

instead of doing the jobs they are assigned to themselves they will instead run around following other colonists doing those jobs and eventually try to do it themselves.

Set your child to full time Recreation and it will learn on its own....

Look in their needs, above their learning need will be two icons representing the current learning activities they are interested in. You need to have those specific activities available otherwise they simply will not do any learning. If they want to do "Radiotalking" and "Skywatching" and you don't have a comms console and they are assigned to an area indoors, then they are going to get pretty upset and not learn anything until their interests change. Said interests change randomly every week or two from what I can tell.

My kid pawns are just standing next to comms radiotalking glad you had a thread didn't realize the new needs interesting. i don't see social moving this just wasting time to keep mood stable, is it form of recreation?

It's all fun and games until the kids call up the empire on the radio and start calling them doodooheads.

Hope I'm not resurrecting this too late, but i find something else it might be.

One of my mothers was using the chairs for the school desk as a breastfeeding spot. For some reason, that cancelled out the ability for them to learn. As soon as i moved the school desk away from any nursing mums, learning carried on as usual.

Huh, when my learning chairs get taken up for breastfeeding it stops interfering with teaching as soon as they're done. Didn't cancel anything, kids turned out fine.
