If you want someone to prioritize researching enable ''manual priorities'' in the work tab and tick research as #1 or #2 (make sure to keep firefighting, patient, bedrest and flick as #1 aswell!)
Try to keep the room clean, if the room is filled with dirt/blood/etc then the research speed will be lowered aswell (you can actually use sterile tiles to increase research speed! Doing this is a mid/lategame thing though)
Ahh i put it in a room with a butchers table and stove so im guessing that this distracts them whenever there trying to research?
No it doesnt distract them.
USe someone with a high Research level. Researching takes time.
Ok thanks
Long term you want the same person doing the research so they skill up, it might not be one of your original colonists.
The Hi-Tech Research Bench and Multi Analyser can be built later after researching them which massively increase the speed.
The person doing the research isnt going to get time to do much else so chose someone with the highest research skill for now but look to getting a new colonist that has high research skill and another skill you can employ closeby - I have a researcher that has high social skill so the Comms Console goes next to him and he breaks off research to greet visitors and also help with the hauling from the fields at harvest, otherwise he is in that room researching or on his spare time.
Make sure the room is comfy, big and warm/cool enough as he will spend 70% of his waking time in there.
