Tips on a Mountain Base?
So I made a tribal mountain base start.

I’m doing pretty well. I recruited someone with 20 animal skill so I have an army of Megasloths… lol

But I fear my base doesn’t have the right defenses setup. I’m at work, I can post pics later.

Does anyone have a base they could share?

Any tactics or designs?

I’m just now researching AC, and the last raiders had pump shotguns.

Prepare for insects. That's a tip.

Put megasloth pen in front of the base so raider have to go through it.
Give your megasloths all the flake/yayo they want.

Speaking in terms of meta, do mountain bases even make sense anymore in the age of sappers/breachers? Those guys tunnel so fast that even solid rock seems to provide scarce protection if any.

The only thing mountain bases really protect against anymore are mortars I suppose, and those you can usually engage before they are assembled unless you're playing on an extremely large map.

Oh, and asteroids maybe.

On a serious note, if you really want to go mountain base make sure that you have three tile thick walls between rooms. Also multiple entrances to every room, ideally the rooms form a grid. This way, you can choose from where to engage infestations.

The connections between rooms should only be one tile wide, this way you can engage an insect in those corridors with 6 pawns fighting one of them at a time.

The larger infestations you are going to have to burn out, so make sure to have something flammable in every room. Also, molotov cocktails - the flame launcher takes too long.

The thick walls will take the insects longer to tunnel through and will contain the heat from your controlled burn better. Make sure you have airvents to vent out the heat.

Infestations don't spawn below a certain temperature, so keep your vaults/storage well frozen. (Don't remember the exact temperature, it's on the wiki.)

Smooth the walls and floors or your pawns are going to go insane looking at their surroundings.

Lol when do infestations start?

As soon as you mine more than ten tiles under solid rock roof they can spawn.

Have a way to went heat from corridors in case you fight infestations with fire, that's an easy way to cook your whole population if you're not carefull. If your corridors are 2 or more tiles wide, have chockepoints where you can tank with one well armored pawn while others shoot.

I never bothered to burn infestations have 2 melee characters in full plate armor holding the choke point while you gun them down one at a time. It's worked for me consistently so if you don't want to go the fire route you shouldn't have to.

But I can't express enough if you're tribal get that plate armor on 2-3 melee peeps immediately. Even if not tribal plate to tie you over until you can get full flack and marine.

The real issue as mentioned by posthum is you don't want them to spawn in any room containing valuable things and storage because they start destroying everything and losing your entire storage could cost you your run. You can either build the storage outside and connect a door leading into your mountain base triple wall thick so the bugs won't spawn in the storage and access is only gained from the mountain base or do what he said about keeping those rooms cold.

It's worth noting that RNG could still mess with you I had an entire cold regulated mountain base once and a solar flare shut my power down for a day and guess what spawned as my base was warming up? Yep, infestation.

If you want a little more control over where infestations go I like to use this mod nowadays.

Can I tame the bugs? My best melee guy also has animals 20.

Others already talked to you about infestations, so I will talk more in general.
If you have megasolths, train them to be able to attack. Unless you send them against a wall of bullets it's almost all you need.
Have at least one pawn with melee weapons in complement of your megasolths for the frontline, even if they are all bad at it. They are incredibly usefull to hold tunnels, and you can't rely on megasolths for that (because you don't realy control them).

And use traps, a lot of traps. If you are on a "standard map" with a lot of trees you don't lack wood, so you can put traps at all corners (just not in places where your pawns are forced to go on them, there is still 1% chance for them to trigger the trap.)

Taming megaspiders is a totally viable strategy, go for it especially on ironman saves :)

No but really, don't.

Thanks. Currently have zero traps. I also need a bigger kill box, I mean foyer to lay said traps and lie in wait.
