why do we not have a vehicle DLC yet
surely if there are literally cars and all sorts of other vehicle/war machine wrecks everywhere on the map you would expect for there to be some kind of functional implementation of vehicles in the game dont tease us tynan

and yes i know about smash phil's vehicle framework and i am constantly watching the progress on it. just wanna know everyone's thoughts on the topic

I think it is a bad game design choice for rimworld specifically. Just because it can be added doesn't mean it should. It creates a demand for caravan animals. If you had cars/vehicles you'd need some sort of additional cost and risk to make them interesting in the game (like how pollution was added for risk/additional cost with mechanoids).

We could brainstorm some and suggest it to ludeon and see how it goes.

vehicle in my opion would only work as a way to travel in the world map in very long distances

A few things.
- Vehicles exist in the form of mods. Both space vehicles and planetary-based ones.

- They exist in the form of riding and carrying items with animals via caravan. These are the two basic functions of a vehicle (riding things and carrying things).

- They exist in the form of the Call Shuttle Royal permit. It will pick up your pawns and fly them and everything they are carrying to a specific map tile within range and then let you pick an exact landing spot.

I think that the game at a base level was not balanced for on-map riding or vehicles that dramatically change the speed of the characters. The entire game is balanced around how fast your pawns move around, and the things that increase that speed (Go Juice, bionics, traits) have been carefully balanced with disadvantages and raid cost increases to try to make them not break the game.

Overall, it would be cool in a perfect world, but there is definitely legit reasons it hasnt been added. But thats what mods are for, right?

srts and sos 2 both add flying vehicles
there are style mods for srts that add helos
I really want pilot-able war machines like mechs and tanks

I think there may be a significant programming hurdle that prevents it on-map, which is you want it to take up multiple cells of space, and current programming means that any entity or pawn that moves can only take up 1 cell. Even the biggest enemies boast large sizes and only "occupy" 1 cell. If they occupy more space than you fix the problem of some giant tank fitting through a 1 cell wide doorway.

You know, if we had scavenger-looking cars and trucks covered with spikes and stuff, the game would finally be Mad Max in its entirety.

You do have a vehicle... your space ship. ;)

Can they fire weapons off of one of those mammoths that the neighboring clans ride in on from time to time?>

Or attach them to the mammoth?

(I haven't played the game long enough to know this or not.)

All they have to do is make sure that the speed of the vehicles don't go above what that of elephants or mammoths do.

Probably because vehicles would only aid caravaning and there has been no significant overhaul to the caravaning mechanics.

What mammoths/elephants are you talking about? If they are from a mod, what happens isn't regulated by devs, so you could have a motorcycle that fires antigrains for all they care. I assume its the giddy up mod or something. My excerpt for how to implement vanilla vehicles based on what you said is let animals do anything vehicles can do, so mounting them, firing off of them, etc.

I don't run with any mods... But, neighboring clans often ride in on Mammoths. or have them with them in their groups/caravans.

Also, on the Map there are Wild Elephants..... at least in many of the maps I play on.. So in my mind elephants are the size of cars... except for the random movement of elephants, should be able to implement cars. or vehicles.

I didn't read your responses and didn't read through the entire thread, I was literally responding to the OP without regard to you.

Not sure most vehicles are necessary with drop pods, especially considering in mid to late game you can just send crews in pods then send them the mats to build pods on the other end for a quick return. But boats seem like they could be kind of useful as a means for faster travel if you have access to a coast. Right now coasts and islands don't really have a lot of incentive for settling on.

Ah no that's my bad for misinterpreting what you said, I thought enemies were riding in on elephants as part of raids. What you're referring to is pack animals in caravans, but yeah elephants are bigger than most cars.

Drop pods are intentionally a one way trip. You still have to caravan back or find other means of transportation.

You can send steel, components and chemfuel with them or behind them and they can build their own drop pods to return with when they're finished. Once you have fabrication and drilling it becomes rather trivial. And the infestations that occur can keep you stocked with fuel.
