Pens nutrition growth
"Playing using family sharing"

Does growing haygrass in a pen help boost up its nutrition growth?

I have like 33 animals in a pen that has a Nutrition growth of 12.28 and a consumption of 14.12 so it is in the red.

So I'm wondering If I make the whole inside of the pen a grow zone of haygrass will that boost the nutrition growth.

I wouldn't. I thought about this myself, but I believe you would just be better off either just growing the haygrass and taking the end product to their barn, or just expand the pen. The reason I say this, is that animals will not eat crops until they get to around 50%, and by that point you just end up wasting potential nutrition that you would have had if you just waited and harvested them.

33 of what type of animal? Have you enabled auto-slaughter?

You'd be better growing haygrass outside the pen. You'll feed a LOT more animals that way, plus you'll have a reserve in case of a cold snap. I've tried growing haygrass in the pen for the same reason, but it's far too much work for too little benefit.

growing haygrass inside pens is a waste.
first of all, the time the plants need to reach 50%growth all the spots are blocked
to not give any nutrition.
then at 50% + animals will eat them, what is also unefficient and a waste.

either make the pen larger, adjust autoslaughter options(you need to have a feeling how many your colony need/can sustain, everything above is a waste of time), split the herde into female/male/races into different pens, grow hay outside and make a 1x1 stockpile only for hay inside the pen, etc, many different solutions.

Would probably just create truckload of work for your growers; would this be effective way to grind plant exp though?

For sowing inside the pen, dandelions are WAY better than haygrass. It's better to grow and harvest hay outside of the pen and carry it in than sowing anything inside the pen, though.

You're probably better off growing trees.

It wouldn't change the displayed nutrition value. The pen marker is only looking at number of tiles and fertility of the tiles, not what is growing on them. In practice it would likely reduce the actual nutrition in the pen since live hay plants are terribly inefficient.

strange cause the nutrition growth goes up and down.

Cause it dropped to 11.52

I believe because the hay growing tiles just get calculated as blocked tiles.

Temperature might also cause it to change, I don't remember offhand. If sowing anything is directly adjusting the nutrition displayed then that is a new change with 1.4 though, but I have had a pen setup in a recent game with a growzone in it and I didn't notice it doing that, and I'm 100% sure it didn't update in 1.3.
