Boomrat wont stay in pen
I made a pen out of slate fence and my boomrat just walks out. The area is enclosed, theres a pen marker and theres a sleeping spot assigned for the boomrat but theres no option to rope it back into the pen

I don't think boomrats are pen animals. You have to give them a area restriction in the animals menu

^This. Check the pen animals list and see if boomrats are listed and active for that pen.
The only things that go in pens are typical domestic wildstock. Yaks, Chickens, muffalo. That kinda of thing. More wilder life has to have a area set.

Yep. I agree and think that boomrats will not appear on the list for the pen at all because of this.

If you click the little i when you have an animal selected, there's a line in its description that tells you whether or not it's a pen animal. Meaning whether or not it will stay in a pen. Boomrats are not pen animals. They're tiny nuisances is what they are. :p

Not really. Plenty of other useful pen animals. Not sure why you wanted boomrats, though. Boomalopes provide chemfeul. Boomrats just provide a fire hazard...
Boomrats are great for being squirrels with c4 strapped to them. If you breed them en mass you can end raids with nothing but boomrat hordes.

I haven't even figured out how to send animals into combat yet
You get a pawn with handling> You train the pet to attack> you set pawn as master to pets> Unleash the hounds. Personally. I prefer their rescue functions and Haul functions to their combat functions. Feels bad when I friendly fire pets in combat. But when my melee pawns are up and fighting I send them with pets to give extra backup. (Get Thrumbos for extra points. But honestly they are not that worth it compared to a pack of wargs which is much more obtainable.)

Boomrats can not be trained for combat. You can just create a zone inside the enemy combat area and set them to it though. They tend to panic when being shot at, but can still start fires rather close to the enemy many times.
You can also use stuff like the skip cast to deliver them directly into melee range.

This. I forgot to mention that you use them like a walking minefield.

Theres also an animal enhancement mod that adds animal implants which, by tier, raise an animals training level.
From low to intermediate using advanced components then from intermediate to advanced using a persona core.
