RimWorld

RimWorld

Is RimWorld a "The Sims" clone ?
I'm very interested in this game after the great reviews I saw here and there BUT when watching videos "let's play" I have the impression that this is a kind of clone of "The Sims" with poorer graphics and less options.
However, a good friend of mine who I trust told me it's a great "strategy" game so I'm a bit confused.
So, given the fact that I dislike 'the sims' and that i love true 'grand strategy' games, but also simulators, and the most important, i love "extremely complex games", how would you convince me to play this game ?
Thank you.

You can make hats from people.

But seriously, i wouldnt call it strategy, theres some when combat starts, but I also wouldnt say its like the sims, its hard to pin down unless youve played dwarf fortress and understand what makes that a good game besides the UI being awful.

I dislike The Sims and I love this game.

Agree with Skullywag, I see this game closer to management games than strategy like Paradox games. There is some, maybe a lot of strategy in it but your true task is to manage resources.

@Skullywag : OK, thanks, but could you explain what makes DF a great game, or even more interesting to me, what makes RIM a good game ? It looks good to me, but is it ? And why ? Everybody says "yes, it's great" but I hardly find a detailed review explaining why it's great.

Buy it. Play it. Request a steam refund if you don't like it. Problem solved.

Maybe this helps: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2016/08/12/how-rimworld-generates-great-stories/

Nobody will give you a definitive answer for a subjective matter. Best thing to do is play for two hours and check if it is for you, if not refund.

I'm a sims player, have been for sixteen years, it's my favourite game series ever. Rimworld is good, but my current Sims game is much better. Rimworld plays nothing like the sims, Rimworld is better for combat and surprises, The sims is much better for building, expansion and character AI.

For me they are both excellent games.

I have no idea what you consider "extremely complex games", or "grand strategy", or even "simulation". Why don't you tell us what games you already like to play, or what game is your favourite.

I don't want to convince you of anything.... I'm no salesperson, I didn't make this game. If you've watched the let's plays and don't like what you see, then why bother? Your friend is right, it's a great game, but I have no idea if it will suit you.

Thanks for this answer.
In my opinion, a good example of a grand strategy, very complex game (and also a simulator) is Europa Universalis 4.

This game is nothing in stategy compared to eu4. This is more management instead.

@Pete Roll

I wouldnt play The Sims...its more of a "fun" game.

Rimworld is nothing like The Sims, its very challenging, all the way until you win, it keeps challenging you.

I do enjoy grand strat games, 4x etc. and games with more depth, which is why I love Rimworld.

Read some reviews dude...aren't there tons of them? And to your original question: This is similar only in a few ways to the sims, there is much more management and decision making than the sims. Furthermore, death is a more prevalant consequence. The sims is a far more easy going & casual game than this.
