Best energy source?
What do you guys depend on for your energy source?

Geothermal. It's consistent and never runs out and doesn't require batteries.

Solar and wind can provide more, but they are reliant on time of day / wind and do require batteries.

Geothermal all the way, with a few solar panels for back up during the day.
and more if you have mods.

no modded: geothermal

moded: plasma fusion reactor, makes WAY more energy then i will EVER need.

I fourth the geothermal vote. Using wind and/or solar requires batteries, then you always have to deal with the power surge event and potential power loss at times.

Geo. That is usually one of my first research goals, until then I stick with 2 turbines and a few solars and batteries as needed. That is usually enough to power lights, turrets, heat and neccessary benches until I get the geo gens and switch over to full electric.

Of course geothermal is the best! But you don't always have enough vents to power everything. A combination of solar and wind energy in conjunction with a separated battery system - where you can switch the batteries to and off the main power line - is the best solution. And with a fuse mod (RTFuse) it's not that hard to deal with the shortages.

With a mod that allows you to make Steam Geysers, it's even easier than that. ^^

I think only wind can potentially produce slightly more than geo. something like 3700 W compared to 3600, respectively.

lol

Like that's going to happen with wind being so random.

@topic
I make small bases normally so large constructions don't play nice with defense. But even still, 3600 W constant power is hard to ignore. Definitely geothermal.

If you're comparing single sources of energy against single sources of energy, sure geothermal is better. Windmills with battery backups are way more practical though. You can build them wherever you want, you can build as many as you want, there are no wind related events like eclipse that will shut them down for prolonged periods of time, and they produce the most energy per component.

Why doesn't anyone seem to like fueled generators? I happen to, they are very consistent, I can put them anywhere I want a generator, and night/day/weather are non-issues.

Same I use stonecutting for my buildings anyways.

Sure, they are great until you get Geothermal on Temperate, Jungle or Boreal Forest maps, but on Ice Sheets, Deserts or perma-toxic maps they are virtually impossible to run.

For me, I see fueled gens as 2 extra jobs for my colony. One is to chop trees (or more trees than normal), and the other to haul logs over to the gen(s). I rather my people focus on other tasks.

Outside of geothermal it really depends on what biome you are playing in.For instance on the icesheets fueled generators are out of the question , solar sucks as during winters the days are short with very weak light and so your only real option is wind.

depending i mostly mix it a bit. geothermal if possible. otherwise just a mix of wind and solar panals. it's kinda where you live and how you set up your base. i like the wind because overal it's quite nice. and with batteries or 3 it never let them fully run out
