What Are Some Tips to Keep Clean? Butcher Table Outside?
Hi Everyone,

Even though I put "Clean" as a #1 priority for just about every colonist, my place is always filthy. It seems like cleaning is always a constant thing.

1. Any commands or ways I can do so?

2. To me, I have tried to use "manual controls" and put everything else, EXCEPT cleaning, as #2, 3, 4. Then, only when cleaning is done, can I let them work again.

How big of a colony are you talking about?

Also, some things, like the butcher table, have a built-in base level of uncleanliness and should be kept in a separate when possible.

Next time you find a downed raider with not so good stats, or simply someone with not so good stats joins, keep him. Make him a dedicated janitor and hauler. Having dedicated janitors will ensure your base is kept clean, and wasting a colonist with good stats just on cleaning/hauling isn't that worth it.

Probably best to keep the butcher table indoors (but in it's own room) to avoid the efficiency hit.

Might be worth it to set up walkways outdoors rather than leaving it as sand/dirt when possible - short of mods, you don't have doormats after all, so a colonist who's walked all over dirt will bring it inside with them, and then others walking through the mess will get it on their shoes and spread it further, all in all causing a fine mess (at least to my understanding of how it works).

If your colonists wandering between buildings or otherwise going to outdoor activities that they do regularly in the same areas instead have walkways to go along, not only will they move faster but also hopefully won't accumulate dirt on their shoes in the first place.

This. I generally make a "butcher closet" in the kitchen that's completely closed off but conveniently close to my kitchen and cooler.

Sometimes your pawns will get food poisoning from food produced in bad conditions. To avoid this you will want stove in separate room and kitchen itself should be kept clean - which is difficult, since this game doesn't allow us to create "room priorities" for cleaning / handling / hauling. I'd love to have this kind of priority... sometimes I see that my kitchen is dirty but in the same time pawns are cleaning pen.

So, keep kitchen separete and - as a result - you want butcher to work in separate room as well. Maybe at some point having separate fridge for corpses would be good, so that you can improve logisitcs.

Any pictures of a separate butcher room?

I can guess some, but I want to see what looks best.

At its most basic it's literally a separate room with the butcher table in it. The layout doesn't really matter much except if you care for aesthetics. Others swear by putting it in the freezer instead. Me, sometimes I just leave the butcher table outside even in -60c temperatures.

It depends on your resources. If you have plenty, than make it look nice, with best floors ect. Easy mode: just small room capable of holding butchers table. One doors leading outside - you dont want this to be a pass-thru room.

Yeah, it works as well. Most probably this will be one of the production tables where you dont have a lot of work to do. Butchering is quick so having it outside is not bad, even with work penalty.

When I have ac I just put the butcher table in the freezer. There’s a work speed penalty, but you save the hauling time. If you aren’t mowing down everything on the map there generally isn’t that much work.

For the kitchen, It’s cleanest when there is just one door. Don’t allow pawns to walk through it.

For clean floors in vanilla make sure your floors have a buffer (like a patio or entrance) because dirt tends to fall off on the first few tiles.

I use the cleaning zones mod (allows you to specify areas to be cleaned). The vanilla game should have this function.

i found that bigger rooms are easier to keep their "clean" status.

a bit of dirt in a 10x10 room won't have as much impact on room cleanliness compared to a 3x3 room. so if you have a hospital or kitchen, it might be worth it to make them REALLY spacious.

Butcher's table is affected by toolboxes so I tend to put it in my machineroom where cleanliness isn't an issue. But imo it is pretty inconsequential where you put it, so long as it isn't next to your cooks.

Have dedicated slaves for cleaning, and zone them where you need the work done. Rather than one big cleaning zone, you can have 2-3 priority zones with a dedicated slave each, and a general-work area for your main slave force to maintain. Just keep it all enclosed so they don't escape, and ideally, have your kitchen/dining room/rec room slaves on 1-2 peg legs and in patchleather thermal wraps so if they revolt, you're not going to have too much trouble putting them in their place.

Ideally, though? Mods. Priority cleaning. Cleaning robots. Slave labour. There's a good number of solutions, and any one of them can be a lifesaver.

Not sure why no one ever bring this up, but you can always put the butcher table inside your freezer. There is really not much reason why you should build it anywhere else. The speed debuff is really inconsequential considering how short butchering job is. Especially after considering the shorten walking distance, you might actually end up with better up time vs having the butcher table inside an "optimal" butcher room.

Doesn't filth factor into the food poisoning chance for materials stored in the freezer, too? I've operated under that assumption for most of the time I've been playing, and I'm pretty sure I've seen people discussing it in threads here in the past.
